We are seeking a Director in SAMS Investments and Trading Technology. You will be responsible for driving the evolution of our portfolio management and trading platform to support our Asset and Wealth Management business.

You will join the team as a hands-on leader in a client driven technology organization delivering on our strategic and short-term initiatives. The businesses the team support include Schwab Asset Management (SAM) and Wealth and Advisory Services (WAS). The team leverages both on-premises and public cloud technologies to build scalable and resilient systems and services.

The ideal candidate is expected to have a deep domain experience in developing and supporting financial research analytics platforms at scale, experience supporting highly technical business teams, strong cloud architecture and application development experience with experience in advancing data engineering capabilities.

The role requires hands-on development and executing on regulatory, tactical and strategic business initiatives focused on enabling our evolution to Schwab AWS public cloud infrastructure, developing a scalable research data platform and enable delivery of analytics and research initiatives. The candidate is expected build trusted partnerships with our business partners and technology organization leaders to establish and execute on a platform strategy.

Responsibilities:

  • Application development leadership and oversight for order management and trade execution applications, including Aladdin OMS and Virtu Valor and Triton. Provide thought leadership in the Software Development Lifecycle planning and execution.
  • Manages and resolves business process and policy issues crossing Funds and SMA business processes.
  • Driving strategic, tactical, and operational plans for the portfolio; ensuring these plans are aligned with the company's strategic plan by setting the technology strategic direction for client experience across the trading domain.
  • Leading the focus on innovation and modernization of order management and trade execution platforms to meet business needs including regulatory and compliance.
  • Managing both new and existing technologies and planning appropriate retirement strategies. Keep apprised and apply evolving industry standards and innovations, in particular the adoption of a "cloud-native" architecture.
  • Direct accountability for managing external vendor relationships for order management technologies including Aladdin and Virtu.
  • Collaborate with other engineers, architects, data scientists, analytics teams, and business product owners in an agile environment.
  • Enable a co-development model across technology and business and establish solution designs to meet future and current needs.
  • People management responsibility, develop a high performing delivery focused team and enable a consistent team culture aligned with Schwab values.
  • Communicate strategic technology plans to associated business partners ensuring collaboration across technology and the business.
  • Lead or participate in developing proof of concepts.
  • Analyze business problems and processes, help refine requirements and design solutions for them.
  • Establish a mature operating model for Dev Ops, Production support and agile development.
  • Be a champion of new ways of collaborating with technology and business partners.
  • Influence and implement improvements and efficiencies in the technical aspects of the development process.

What you have

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, math, engineering, or other technical field, or equivalent experience
  • Directly supported either a sell-side Trading Desk or a Buy-Side Trading Desk
  • Must have technology management experience with:
    • Equities Trading Workflow (Order Management, Compliance, Placements, Allocation, Settlement)
    • Trade Analytics (pre-trade, post-trade), Transaction Cost Analysis (TCA)
    • Equities Trading Systems: third-party (Charles River, Aladdin, Longview) or Proprietary and Execution Management Systems (EMS) such as Virtu Triton
    • Real-Time Market Data, FIX Protocol, Real-time Messaging
  • 8+ years of experience delivering large systems in .Net, Java or Python
  • 5+ years managing teams with history of growth and experience adapting to organization needs.
  • Three years of development experience with cloud services (AWS, GCP, AZURE)
  • Expertise in build and deployment tools - (Visual Studio, PyCharm, Git/Bitbucket/Bamboo, Maven, Jenkins, Nexus)
  • Experience with integration and service frameworks (e.g., API Gateways, Apache Camel, Swagger API, Zookeeper, Kafka, messaging tools, REST, microservices)
  • Experience leveraging continuous integration/development tools (e.g., Jenkins, Docker, Containers, OpenShift, Kubernetes, and container automation) in a CI/CD pipeline.
  • Ability to conceptualize the best tactical approach for a team to deliver a project while defining the target state evolution path.

Preferred Experience:

  • Outstanding influence skills with both executive level technology and business leaders to translate business needs and client demands into scalable technology solutions.
  • Extensive prior experience with Agile (Scrum/XP) processes in planning, implementation, and support of business application components, including change & release management.
  • Pragmatic, results-oriented leader; advocating architectures with measurable and evident value to the firm and our clients.
  • Collaborative, goal-oriented leader; focusing on long-term value and results.
  • Experience in successfully leading change through complex environments and organizational structures spanning multiple business enterprises and investment products.
  • Ability to shape, define and present a complete and thorough picture of Schwab's Technology environment including developing thoughtfully written action plans and clear/regular communication to executive management across the businesses and technology organizations.

In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
