Your opportunity

This Data Engineer in ODX Platform Engineering Support is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the stability, performance, and reliability of our data exchange platforms. This role will require collaborating closely with production support engineers and stakeholders to identify and resolve issues on large scale databases while troubleshooting issues and optimizing queries all to ensure seamless data exchange across multiple environments. The candidate is expected to have good understanding of data engineering and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) best practices, such as creating and securing data pipelines and data stores while documenting and following industry standards to meet Schwab's policies and procedures.

The candidate will be expected to have a strong background in database management, ETL processes, and performance tuning. This candidate will be tasked with finding ways to automate repetitive task resulting in the creation of effective, reliable, and repeatable solutions that continues to improve Schwab's operational excellence for multiple Data Exchange platforms.

What you'll do

  • Manage, monitor, and support SQL Server and Oracle datastore environments.
  • Troubleshoot database performance issues, including slow queries and indexing problems.
  • Ensure data exchange availability, security, and integrity across multiple platforms.
  • Perform performance tuning, indexing, and query optimization for the platforms.
  • Leverage platform specific tooling to review execution plans and recommend design changes.
  • Maintain system documentation, best practice procedures, and technical runbooks.
  • Ensure adherence to data governance, security policies, and compliance regulations while participating in audits and implementing corrective actions as required.
  • Participate in communicating and adopting SRE principles across the team.

What you have

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent business experience
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a database/platform support role with proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle databases, including performance tuning and administration.
  • Proven ability to consume business requirements, including user stories, use case development and work flow documentation
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tools.
  • Strong scripting skills using Python, Shell, or Java.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills - ability to quickly analyze data to identify key insights and apply them to resolve issues.
  • Strong communication skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an Agile team and related methodologies.
  • Product and project management skills. Business judgment, including ability to balance resources, and evaluate and address risks
  • Prior experience with change and problem management process.
  • Prior working knowledge of JIRA or any related Scrum tools preferred
  • Competence in Microsoft Office tools including Outlook, Word, and Excel
