Lead Cloud Engineer 

About the Role


Cars Commerce builds solutions for automotive dealerships, manufacturers, and consumers. Our driving force is to deliver one platform to simplify everything about buying and selling cars.  Our platform enables dealerships and OEMs with innovative technical solutions and data-driven intelligence to better reach and influence eady-to-buy shoppers, increase inventory turn and gain market share.  To support the growth and tighter integration of our existing brands like Cars.com, Dealer Inspire, and Accu-Trade we are seeking a passionate and innovative Senior Engineer for our expanding native cloud platform.


In this role you will be leading projects, collaborating with your team, and raising operational standards.  You will be instrumental in helping us design and maintain systems that deliver value to our customers. You’ll lead by example, elevating your team as they implement and maintain systems. You have a strong background in infrastructure-as-code & containerization, including a significant amount of experience working with Amazon Web Services (AWS).  You’ve spent multiple years supporting & scaling production systems, and have experience implementing infrastructure-as-code, ideally using Terraform. You are a leading contributor on your team and have a track record of completing work on time and to specification. You are capable of providing solutions and plans for ambiguous problems. You have a desire to learn and the ability to be curious. You are driven by gaining knowledge and growing your career.


This role is positioned within our Cloud Engineering team and works closely with our various Product Engineering teams to collaborate on new projects, operate and maintain the existing platform, and look ahead to what is in the future with AWS.


Responsibilities



  • Deliver work to completion

  • Incrementally breakdown and manage work for yourself and at times the team to complete our highest priority projects

  • Recognize and demonstrate the ability to see how day to day work maps to the big picture company goals and adapt work accordingly

  • Partner with stakeholders for requirements and prioritization

  • Mentor other engineers to develop their skills

  • Document, build, and support cloud infrastructure for new and existing applications within AWS

  • Build operational maturity and readiness into team culture

  • Establish and document standards and procedures for team and organization wide initiatives

  • Build and maintain monitoring and dashboards to drive data driven discovery and monitoring of systems

  • Build tooling to proactively detect problems and mechanisms to solve them before they become emergencies

  • Proactively plan and execute routine maintenance and auditing 

  • Participate in 24/7 on-call support of AWS cloud infrastructure (as needed)

  • Design, document, and maintain our cloud infrastructure via infrastructure-as-code

  • Improve operational tasks via automation

  • Regularly understand ambiguous business problems related to your work as well as the work of your team; help resolve them.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, related degree, or equivalent practical experience required

  • 8+ years of administrative experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands-on systems engineering experience on AWS

  • At least 3 years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 5+ years demonstrated experience with AWS infrastructure tools (EKS, OpenSearch, S3, RDS, API gateway, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, Route 53, VPC)

  • 5+ Years demonstrated experience programming with at least one language such as Elixir, Golang, C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, Ruby, SQL, Bash

  • Demonstrated experience with container orchestration solutions (Docker/Kubernetes)

  • Thorough knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems)

  • Extensive experience using common source control tools and deployment methodologies

  • Extensive experience using modern monitoring tools (Cloudwatch, DataDog, etc) and establishing metrics, monitoring, alarming, and dashboards

  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code, DevOps, SRE concepts and best practices

  • Experience in a high-availability environment

  • Experience with DNS, Web Traffic Routing, and CDNs (Cloudfront, Akamai, Cloudflare)

  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code orchestration tools (Terraform and Terragrunt)

  • Understanding of CI/CD and deployment toolchains

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability and willingness to manage ambiguity i.e., help shape solutions and prioritize deliverables to align with the Company’s vision


Preferred Qualifications



  • Previous experience implementing and supporting high traffic (millions of daily visits) applications and services running on AWS

  • Strong track record of delivering results for large scale systems

  • Strong mentoring skills

  • Ability to be a force multiplier for the team that shares knowledge and supports skill growth across the team

  • Deep knowledge of infrastructure-as-code in AWS using Terraform

  • Ability to recognize silos of skills and responsibilities and break them down to shared responsibilities

  • AWS Certifications

In the spirit of pay transparency, we are excited to share the base salary range for this position which is not inclusive of bonuses, benefits or other forms of compensation that the position may be eligible for. If you are hired at Cars Commerce, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills and/or experience. If the salary range is close to what you're seeking, then we encourage you to apply and learn more about the total compensation package for this position.

Salary Range
$131,400$164,250 USD
