Our Climate Strategy team is responsible for understanding the shifting climate-related landscape, advising senior leadership on its potential implications for Capital One, building a company-wide climate strategy, organizing and leading company-wide climate strategy efforts, consulting with the emissions measurement and disclosure teams, as well as contributing to climate risk and broader line of business efforts across the enterprise. The team works on high importance, high visibility projects at the most senior levels of the company that have lasting impacts on thousands of associates and millions of customers.

Position summary:

We are seeking a Senior Manager to join our Climate Strategy team and collaborate with Corporate Strategy, Investor Relations, Finance, Enterprise Supplier Management, Enterprise Risk Management, Global Workplace Solutions, our Line of Business teams, and other teams across the company to communicate our climate and environmental narrative, build an approach to support our strategy via these communications, and ensure consistency across a variety of disclosure, reporting, and publication initiatives. By doing so, you will contribute a central voice in the overall direction of Capital One's climate and environmental efforts. To succeed in the role, you will need to synthesize information from multiple sources, communicate and collaborate with several specialized teams, draft and refine public-facing language, and integrate findings into cohesive and insightful summaries. This role comes with the unique opportunity to build your strategic and communicative skill sets on complex problems, hone your influence and problem solving skills through interactions with a diverse, senior, and cross-functional group of business partners, and advance Capital One's efforts related to climate change. You will work in a close and collegial team environment with expertise in climate, strategy, and program and project management.

Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for leading and assisting with a broad range of efforts including the following:

  • Building a strategy to communicate Capital One's climate- and environmentally-related strategies
  • Developing a narrative for, and the writing of, among others, major climate- and environmentally-related disclosures, reports, responses to requests for information / requests for proposals, and associate-facing (i.e., Capital One-employee facing) communications, including relevant sections of Capital One's Proxy Statement, ESG Report, and CDP disclosure
  • Partnering with Capital One's Head of Climate Strategy and Head of Climate to craft and edit language, creating strategies to ensure that all climate- and environmentally-related narratives and communications strike the right tone consistently with our stakeholders
  • Responding to requests and inquiries on Capital One's climate and environmental strategic activities and approach on an ad hoc basis
  • Maintaining strong relationships and lines of communication with business partners and other key stakeholders across Capital One to capture and elevate climate- and environmentally-related efforts
  • Working with partners inside and outside of Capital One to ensure consistency of climate- and environmentally-related messaging across venues
  • Providing counsel and support on the climate- and environmentally-related portions of Capital One's ESG planning initiatives
  • Collaborating within the Climate Strategy team to research and analyze current and emerging climate- and environmentally-related communication requirements and options, including the impacts of new laws, regulations, and policies

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least 4 years of experience in technical writing OR 4 years of legal writing OR 4 years of corporate communications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree or MBA degree
  • At least 7 years of experience communicating highly sensitive narratives, for example in legal, legislative, or regulatory contexts
  • Experience drafting and reviewing a broad range of SEC filings, other public disclosures, and ESG reports and other ESG disclosures
  • Strong organizational skills with impeccable attention to detail
  • Excellent analytical aptitude
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take and incorporate feedback
  • Track record of prioritizing and managing a significant volume of projects on a broad array of topics with multiple and simultaneous deadlines
  • History of building effective collegial relationships with partners at all organizational levels
