Sr Director, Experience Design Research - Enterprise Developer, Associate and Accelerator Design

Capital One's Experience Design (XD) organization creates memorable, meaningful customer and associate experiences that build our brand with humanity and drive business advantage. The goal of Experience Design Research is to accelerate product teams' learning velocity. We do this by conducting discovery, testing, and assessments and overseeing democratized research and testing conducted by others. A key aspect of our role is to find and synthesize existing research and data to help teams acquire the knowledge they seek to make informed decisions.

As the Design Research leader across Capital One's Enterprise Developer, Associate, and Accelerator Design organization, you are responsible for collaborating with product managers, designers, and engineers to articulate learning needs, learning agendas, and research roadmaps. You track research questions and insights across the internal enterprise product areas. You are well connected to and understand each product area's strategy and needs in order to identify and prioritize research activities including primary research, knowledge mapping, assessments, and testing. You maintain a close relationship to research leader peers across Capital One to identify opportunities to re-use learnings and collaborate on research that can serve multiple lines of business.

Responsibilities

  • Human Centered: Deliver valuable and actionable insights, by collaborating with product teams to identify and prioritize user needs, map user experiences, ensure problem-solution fit, evaluate the usefulness and usability of our current and proposed experiences.
  • Business Focused: Understand our business, processes, and competitive landscape to shape how research engages and what it delivers.
  • Influence: Build & maintain trusted relationships with business, product, design & engineering partners to encourage a learning mindset.
  • Research Expertise: Establish direction and expectations for design research practice across the line of business. Seek out novel methods and technologies to accelerate learning velocity.
  • Problem Solving: Oversee research intake for the line of business, develop strategies to accelerate learning, and collaborate with Research Operations to provide tooling and education that enables researcher-led and democratized research (including user access and rapid testing capabilities)
  • Transformational Leadership: Hire and develop a high performing research leadership team and highly competent, impactful individual contributors

Basic Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of applied user experience research
  • At least 8 years managing user experience research teams in large, corporate enterprises

Preferred Qualifications

  • 12+ years of applied user experience research experience including, conducting quantitative or qualitative primary research, data analysis of survey data or behavioral analytics.
  • 12+ years experience delivering, communicating, and presenting design research insights
  • 10+ years managing user experience research teams in large, corporate enterprises
  • 5+ years managing managers
  • Exceptional business communications (verbal and written)
  • Proven ability to build relationship capital horizontally and vertically across large organizations
  • Experience with human resources, career coaching, talent and performance management
  • Ability to attract and hire top talent
  • Knowledge with any or all of the following subjects: Human Factors, User Experience Design, Psychology, Sociology, Communication, Information Architecture, Systems Architecture, Computer Science, Data Science, Economics

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $272,600 - $311,200 for Sr. Director, Design

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
