Sr. Director, Data Engineering

Capital One is seeking a Sr. Director of Data Engineering to work in our Enterprise Data organization. This individual will specifically be leading teams delivering and expanding highly performant and scalable data products and platforms to drive consumption of data from our enterprise data ecosystem, while driving data engineering best practices. The candidate will also be responsible for designing new solutions to ensure that Capital One is able to increasingly innovate with its data assets.

This leader must have the ability to attract and recruit the industry's best talent, and simultaneously have the technical chops to ensure that we build compelling, customer oriented solutions in an iterative methodology. Success in the role requires an innovative mind, a proven track record of delivering next generation software and data products, rigorous analytical skills, and a passion for creating market-leading software that integrates automation, machine learning, and predictive analytics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a change agent, driving our data strategy and capabilities forward to deliver trusted, well managed quality data experiences for all data stewards and stakeholders
  • Focus on building leading-edge capabilities in support of ensuring world-class experiences for data producers and consumers with enterprise platforms
  • Partner with Product and Design teams to strategize and build leading technology solutions
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and market trends in data, applying learnings to improve our business and customer experience
  • Drive a forward-looking data strategy that can realize long-term and commercial objectives
  • Lead a data organization of approximately 70+ engineers
  • Commitment to high-quality delivery, engineering excellence, and uncompromising operations
  • Develop data products, platforms, and services that fully enable all customers of the data ecosystem to deliver the business strategy and performance objectives, unleashing the full power of data for their business
  • Built modern data stacks from the ground up and managed them in production at scale
  • Successfully manage an engaged and sophisticated set of business and technology customers who possess a strong understanding of and high expectations regarding data
  • As a transformational leader, recruit, nurture and retain top talent, building a world-class engineering team within the enterprise technology organization
  • Serve as an inspiring role model, a leader the team wants to emulate
  • Motivate a highly talented next level of leaders, ensuring succession as well as their own people development objectives
  • Drive the team to understand, challenge and improve the technologies through which Capital One leverages data and predictive analytics
  • Lead efforts to deploy new and existing applications into AWS environments and provide operational support for the applications.
  • Conduct design and code review to ensure compliance with standards
  • Establish a trusted, close touch relationship with divisional data leaders

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least 9 years of experience in software engineering or data engineering
  • At least 7 years of people management experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience managing the tech strategy for an organization's product
  • 5+ years of experience in AWS or public-cloud technologies.
  • 5+ years of experience in Data consumption, management or governance.
  • 5+ years of experience leading multi-functional data engineering teams
  • 5+ years of experience with Spark, Snowflake, or Flink
  • 5+ years of experience with data orchestration tools
  • 5+ years of experience with data lineage, data quality, and data observability
  • 5+ years of experience with data ingestion tools
  • 5+ years of experience with data pipeline and transforms tools
  • 5+ years of experience with full stack development
  • 5+ years of experience with running high-availability, highly resilient platforms

Capital One will consider sponsoring a new qualified applicant for employment authorization for this position.

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $321,500 - $366,900 for Sr. Dir, Data Engineering

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
