Job Description

Capital One's Legal Department is seeking a highly-motivated attorney to serve as our enterprise military lending subject matter expert and business counsel for our enterprise Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) business as well as other areas of law governing financial institutions. You will work with colleagues across Capital One's lines of business, as well as with compliance officers, auditors, and regulators, and you'll do it all in a collaborative, supportive environment that values your insight, promotes continuous learning, and rewards creative thinking.

The attorney in this role will be the subject matter expert for matters relating to the SCRA and the Military Lending Act (MLA) and provide day-to-day legal advice as business counsel to our Enterprise Military Service team. In addition, you will support other enterprise and bank functions as the subject matter expert for the Truth in Savings Act (and Reg DD) and several state laws. You will have the opportunity to advise on new products, issues and events, and customer management.

A successful candidate will also have a demonstrated ability and willingness to work as a results-oriented team player, interacting with attorneys and other colleagues across departments and job levels; the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision; strong organizational skills with impeccable attention to detail; excellent analytical, oral and written communication skills; and the ability to work cooperatively with internal constituents to create efficient processes and to get issues resolved across organizational boundaries and levels.

Job Responsibilities

  • Act as the Enterprise's military lending subject matter expert, providing legal interpretation and guidance to Compliance and business stakeholders, including various Accountable Executives and Business Owners
  • Identify recent regulatory and legal highlights and present to senior level executives
  • Provide legal and strategic advice and guidance for major military lending initiatives
  • Communicate relevant federal and state military law changes and clarifying guidance to stakeholders, and support implementation of such changes across the Enterprise
  • Host weekly office hours for a large, cross functional Enterprise-wide audience
  • Provide legal guidance on remediating complaints and self-identified risk exposures and legal violations
  • Provide legal guidance on regulations relating to deposit accounts and various other enterprise and bank functions
  • Engage and manage outside counsel

Basic Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
  • At least 4 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency and

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of legal experience at a law firm, financial institution, or government agency, ideally with a focus on regulations governing financial institutions/consumer protection laws.
  • Experience in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations protecting servicemembers (including SCRA and MLA)
  • Experience in laws and regulations governing deposit accounts and other retail bank functions
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret legislation and regulations
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, assume new responsibilities, and prioritize work to meet deadlines
  • Strong writing and communication skills to deal with internal and external parties, including ability to communicate persuasively orally and in writing with senior executives
  • Experience writing for and interacting with examiners and auditors
  • Ability to work effectively both in teams and independently

This role is hybrid meaning associates typically spend about half their time (2-3 days per week) in-person at one of our offices listed on this job posting. Monday and Fridays are enterprise- wide virtual work days. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are in-person days for associates to spend time together working in our beautifully-designed team areas.
