Managing Underwriter & Portfolio Manager (FIG), Senior Director
The Underwriting and Portfolio Management organization is responsible for working with internal partners to underwrite new transactions and manage the existing portfolio of loans. Our Underwriters and Portfolio Managers balance supporting the Commercial's Bank's growth and ensuring we have a scalable, well-managed business. This role supports the Financial Institutions Group (FIG).
FIG is an industry specialized group supporting a national lender finance and fund finance business with approximately $23B in commitments. A portion of FIG is the Consumer Lender Finance platform, which is handed through the hiring team.
As a Managing UW&PM, you are responsible for leading & managing a team of underwriters within a specific line of business to analyze, assess, and mitigate risk on commercial loan proposals. Responsibilities:
- Partner with business leadership and key stakeholders to establish goals, create and manage underwriting guidelines, drive the business model, and evaluate market opportunities so as to contribute to the unit's profitability and allocate resources appropriately
- Partner with credit risk management to foster an environment of open dialogue around risk tolerance and credit appetite
- Maintain portfolio quality by assisting in the underwriting of complex loans and in the development of loan modifications and strategies
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of the bank, its customers, loan portfolio, competitive environment, economic trends and policies
- Schedule and conduct periodic portfolio and industry reviews to forecast and identify emerging problems within the portfolio
- Identify potential structural enhancements in order to improve the credit and reduce risk exposure
- Encourage an atmosphere of urgency toward meeting customer's needs and providing excellent customer service
- Promote appropriate application of all bank and line of business policies and procedures; support and drive adherence to regulatory compliance requirements
- Foster an environment that provides a balance between sound, consistent underwriting and credit quality standards with the need for deposit, loan and fee growth, profitability and customer retention
- Demonstrate subject matter expertise for specific line of business, including attending and participating in industry workshops and conferences
- Responsible for developing and managing a diverse team engaged in the underwriting, structuring, and closing of loan transactions
- Craft a strategic plan & vision, oversee the identification and execution of critical process improvements
- Responsible for recruiting, training, performance management, rewards and recognition - in accordance with our company values
- Cultivate a positive work environment by ensuring all team members are properly challenged and motivated and play an integral role in the team's productivity through an effective and equitable allocation of assignments
- Develop high caliber associates through on-going mentoring, coaching and career development planning
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or military experience
- At least 10 years of experience in credit underwriting, portfolio management, or asset management
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree
- At least 12 years of experience in credit underwriting, portfolio, or asset management

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
Chicago, IL: $240,300 - $274,300 for Managing Specialty Underwriter & Portfolio Manager
McLean, VA: $264,300 - $301,700 for Managing Specialty Underwriter & Portfolio Manager
New York, NY: $288,400 - $329,100 for Managing Specialty Underwriter & Portfolio Manager
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
