Capital One's Digital Commerce & Innovation organization is seeking a Director of Software Engineering with a passion for AI to join its Velocity Black by Capital One team. This Director will build and lead exceptional software engineering teams to reimagine concierge for the digital age. They must have the ability to attract and recruit the industry's best talent, and simultaneously have the technical chops to ensure that we build compelling, customer-focused solutions in an iterative methodology.

As a candidate for this role, you're able to seamlessly switch from diving deep into technology with engineers to driving high-level, strategic discussions. You are a naturally curious technologist and stay on top of emerging trends, including prototyping of nascent technologies. You are not afraid to question any existing processes and solutions, yet you display a keen sense of business value proposition and focus on the right priorities. In this role, you will:

  • Lead, manage, and grow teams of software engineers to build meaningful consumer products products powered by the latest technology with a focus on applied AI for web and mobile
  • Ability to wear the 'Product hat' with deep empathy for the customer
  • Partner with a cross-functional team of engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to evolve how our customers interact with Capital One
  • Mentor and guide the professional and technical development of engineers on your team
  • Partner with product and design leaders to define the strategy, roadmap and destination architecture, leveraging your deep customer empathy
  • Manage a portfolio of diverse technology platforms and projects to build scalable applications that meet or exceed our customer needs
  • Work within and across teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions across a full-stack of development tools and technologies
  • Lead the craftsmanship, availability, resilience, and scalability of your solutions
  • Encourage innovation, implementation of cutting-edge technologies, inclusion, outside-of-the-box thinking, teamwork, self-organization, and diversity
  • Continuously improve software engineering practices

The Ideal Candidate:

  • You are deeply technical. You possess a strong foundation in engineering, and your passion for consumer technology and AI enables you to identify and act on user experience optimization opportunities that others miss.
  • You adapt quickly and thrive on bringing clarity to big, undefined problems. You love asking questions and digging deep to uncover the root of problems and can articulate your findings concisely with clarity.
  • You are familiar with Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI integration optimization techniques to improve the performance - scalability, cost, latency, throughput - of large scale production AI systems
  • You have experience integrating solutions into a complex web service & mobile application ecosystem
  • You bring people along, engaging partners early and often from product, risk, cyber, and other critical teams.
  • You have a track record of building and leading high-performing teams in large and highly collaborative organizations.
  • You have a deep understanding of well managed processes and experience successfully implementing risk mitigation strategies
  • Passion for staying abreast of the latest research, and an ability to intuitively understand highly technical publications and judiciously apply novel techniques in production.
  • You get fulfillment from empowering others to achieve their potential and you actively drive professional development through mentoring and coaching. You are hands-on when necessary and lead by example.
  • You are a resilient trail blazer who can forge new paths to achieve business goals when the route is unknown.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least 7 years' experience in software development
  • At least 5 years' experience in people management
  • At least 3 years' experience delivering features to users and building APIs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree
  • 10+ years' experience in software development
  • 5+ years of experience in one or both of the following: Python, Typescript
  • 5+ years' experience in Agile practices
  • 4+ years experience with AWS
  • Familiarity with AI tools (Retrieval Augment Generation (RAG), Vector databases, Prompt engineering, LangChain, Llama, EMP, Sandbox, Haystack)
  • Successful in-market implementation of UI/UX frontend development using React
  • Familiarity with Data and Feature Pipelines
  • Familiarity with Node

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $274,800 - $313,600 for Director, Software Engineering

Illinois (Hybrid On-Site): $256,200 - $292,400 for Director, Software Engineering

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
