Job Description:

Our purpose is to bring together people, energy and markets to power and navigate a changing world. In a time of constant change and possibility we need new talent to pursue commercial opportunities, fueled by world-class insight and expertise. We’re always striving for more innovative digital solutions, sustainable outcomes and closer collaboration across our company and beyond, and you could be part of that too. Together we continue to grow as the world’s leading energy company!

About the role

The business-led innovation team (Vista) within bp Supply Trading & Shipping (ST&S) business is set up with the mission to help future-proof the organization. We set out to answer three questions:

  • How can technologies today solve yesterday’s problems faced by ST&S?
  • How can technologies of tomorrow give us a commercial competitive edge today?
  • What do we need to do/think/behave differently in a rapidly evolving business landscape?

Vista is an agile, impact-driven, and solution-agnostic team within ST&S, focused on identifying and using innovative technologies, business models, and ecosystem partnerships to address commercial opportunities.

We do this through close collaboration with our business collaborators across the front, middle, and back offices as well as technology partners (internally and externally). Vista maintains a business-led, solution-agnostic approach when it comes to solving a business challenge or opportunity; we are obsessed with the problem and the comprehensive suitability of the solution, but not the specific technology or path to delivery (i.e., via internal build or external buy).

Within Vista, the Implementation function is one of the three core pillars. It is responsible for the successful and timely delivery of innovative solutions via rapid prototyping to prove or disprove concepts to solve business challenges and opportunities. Successful products are then progressed to a minimum viable product (MVP) to release the value for the business.

To support the ST&S business, Vista is seeking an experienced Product Manager to lead digital product and project delivery for Vista in the Chicago or Houston offices.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop a solid understanding of the ST&S business and its processes that each Vista prototype product supports – constraints, goals, commercial drivers, priorities, and timelines.
  • Develop a solid understanding of users and user needs, and help to define clear, commercial business value cases behind the product requirements.
  • Work closely with Vista Originators and business partners to ensure all product requirements (functional and non-functional) are accurately captured, communicated, and aligned with the business value proposition.
  • Proactively seek to improve processes, working closely with colleagues in supporting functions to make them more fit-for-purpose for Vista’s remit.
  • Be creative and help lead ideation sessions, workshops, and brainstorming sessions with Vista colleagues and business collaborators to uncover existing innovation opportunities.
  • Create and own the product roadmap, ensure feature prioritization is in place, and conduct regular backlog grooming, with the ability to shift quickly if required.
  • Be a strong advocate for adopting Agile methodologies and best practices with the product team and facilitate and lead ceremonies as required.
  • Collaborate with colleagues globally in supporting functions, including but not limited to designers, engineers, data scientists, digital security, procurement, and legal to deliver innovative products at pace.
  • Ensure frequent, transparent, clear, and relatable updates to Vista, business, and functional partners, and respond to feedback in a positive and proactive way.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to drive delivery clarity and escalate challenges in a timely and proactive manner.
  • Proactively conduct user testing and feedback sessions, using the opportunities to assess the delivery outcome and gather feedback for further enhancement, pivot, or sunset products in an impartial manner.
  • Be curious and stay abreast of industry trends, competitors, and technology advancements to inform product development and for ST&S to maintain a competitive edge.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Business, Computer Science, or related degree. An advanced degree is a plus.
  • Product Management qualifications are desirable.
  • Proven track record as a product manager, with a minimum of 5 years of experience, preferably in a digital or technology-focused environment.
  • Ability to take an ambiguous business idea, craft it into an opportunity, and see it through product development and, where required, to scale.
  • Champion of Agile methodologies and continuous improvement ethos.
  • Strong communicator with the ability to articulate and write clear Epics, Features, User stories, UAT requirements, as well as craft regular project updates for non-technical collaborators.
  • Solid proficiency in product management tools (e.g., Azure DevOps, Jira, Atlassian) and a good understanding of software development processes.
  • Commercially savvy with the ability to link business needs to roadmap prioritization and identify high-impact requirements.
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task and prioritize across portfolio projects and time zones.
  • Excellent customer management skills, with the ability to communicate effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a globally distributed team environment spanning the US, UK, and Singapore.

Desirable Criteria

  • Prior experience as a digital Product Manager or Business Analyst in a commodity trading business.
  • Experience in delivering AI-enabled products and a solid understanding of AI technologies and applications.
  • Strong knowledge of AI and experience delivering AI products.
