Our mission is to create a competitive advantage throughout Booking.com using our data. One of the foundational tasks to deliver this is to enable our company to build reliable, well-governed and modern data pipelines transporting our HR Data so we continue to understand one of our biggest assets, our People.
You'll balance the needs of operating our on-premise infrastructure while simultaneously transitioning towards modernized, cloud-based pipelines using a data lake and warehouse using containerized compute and cloud-based storage. You're surrounded by a high density of data engineers and data managers, relative to most teams at Booking. Together, you'll work on projects with (backend) engineering teams eager to get your support in building consumer-focused pipelines as well as senior stakeholders to challenge and revolutionize the functional use of our data underpinned by strong data management and governance.
Key Job Responsibilities and Duties:
People Leadership
- Lead by example by taking ownership, being proactive and collaborating

Technology, Craft & Delivery
- Create processes for developing data models, in line with data governance requirements, that can be operationalised within the company's workflows and infrastructure to ensure data solutions meet business requirements
- Map data flows between systems and workflows within your team;s scope to drive efficiency and ensure proper controls
- Support segmentation of your teams data assets into sustainable and business-enabling domains by applying domain-driven design and enterprise architecture best practices (e.g. TOGAF)
- Enable implementation of scalable tooling for data flow automation and controls to manage the entire data life-cycle
- Manage the building of extensible data pipelines spanning different data encodings to support varied business requirements
- Manage implementation of efficient data ingestion solutions, batch processing, and event-based streams to enable real-time actions and rapid business decisions
- Monitor and adjust relevant SLIs and SLOs to take ownership of data solutions end-to-end and account for competing priorities across your team
- Ensure proper definition of quality requirements for data domains and data assets, based on standards for all data quality dimensions, to ensure design of high-quality data solutions
- Develop approaches for monitoring, failure detection, and data availability across your teams to ensure data timeliness and completeness
- Drive high quality data through use of data quality monitoring and issue remediation through Business Analysts and Data managers.
- Create robust ways of working, capacity planning and delivery within the team through use of ASANA and other practices such as Agile.
- Responsible for team delivery on wider projects where the People Data Management team are workstream leads through stand-ups, feature planning and sprint reviews.
Architecture & Product Strategy
- Thought partner for Product to define, shape and deliver the roadmap
- Build new products, processes and operational plans
- Negotiate on the strategic importance of own product roadmap features
- Drive innovation in own team
- Own the architecture across own team
Role Requirements:
- Experience leading and managing a team of data analysts/managers in a fast-paced and complex environment
- Intermediate knowledge of data modelling methods (Relational, Dimensional)
- Intermediate knowledge of Enterprise Architecture, e.g. TOGAF
- Intermediate knowledge of IT governance frameworks, e.g. COBIT 5
- Intermediate knowledge of streaming data / pipeline tooling such as Apache airflow, Kafka
- Strong knowledge of data quality requirements and implementation methodologies
- Strong knowledge of Data Management requirements based on best practices, e.g. DAMA-DMBOK
- Intermediate knowledge of one or more database querying languages or scripting tools, e.g. SQL, VBA, Pandas, R, Python
- Solution oriented and result driven, analytical skills and data-driven mindset
- Proven experience driving successful technical, business and people related initiatives that improved productivity, performance and quality
- Excellent communication skills and demonstrated experience influencing and cooperating with people at all levels
