The Marketplace mission is to truly understand traveller needs and behaviour across multiple verticals, design and implement common traveller-facing product experiences, steward travellers to the right vertical offering, and grow Connected Trips, where travellers not only book hotels or homes, but also flights, car rentals, rides, and local attractions with us. The long-term mission of Marketplace is to grow traveller loyalty through delivering excellent product experience, by evolving our customer loyalty program, and by ensuring Booking.com supports our travellers in the right way throughout their trip. Marketplace Business Unit runs the common parts of our website and app, as well owns for key Booking.com-wide capabilities, such as the User Experience, Experimentation Platform, Measurement, and operational Predictive ML models.

Responsibilities:

As Director of Experimentation and Measurement - your responsibility is to lead and ensure that our product development and customer engagement strategies at Booking.com are guided by thorough Experimentation and Measurement excellence. This role will bring expertise in designing, executing, and analyzing experiments that improve customer experiences and business outcomes, driving continuous innovation and measurable growth. You will lead the efforts in designing the right measures of Incrementality, Customer Lifetime Value, and drive excellence in the hypotheses-driven product development practices.

The role is located in Amsterdam and reports to the VP of Data and Insights. The role will lead the Data Science and Analytics teams who develop and implement experimentation and measurement standards, methodologies, frameworks and guardrails across Booking.com. These teams are also the go-to for the most challenging causal inference or experimentation problems across Booking.com, supporting others and running deep-dive projects as needed.

Specifically, as the Director of Experimentation and Measurement, you will -

  • Develop and implement the company's Experimentation and Measurement strategy to drive data-driven decision-making and long-term value for both travelers and partners. Drive craft Excellence in Experimentation, Measurement, and Discovery across Booking.com.
  • Develop and implement Experimentation and Data Science standard processes, frameworks, and guardrails across Booking.com to improve user experience and business performance.
  • Strengthen our Data Science, Experimentation, and Measurement muscle beyond craft members, expand the application of Causal Inference and Model-based Techniques, and work closely with User Research on metrics discovery and rapid user testing. Advocate for experimentation standard methodologies across the company and drive a culture of curiosity, learning, and data-driven decision-making. Promote the value of experimentation to leadership and teams across departments.
  • Be responsible for the Measurement Framework and metrics development across the Connected Trip (Incrementality, Customer Lifetime Value, Customer Equity, Predictive metrics to name a few) in close collaboration with the Marketing, Product, Data, and Research teams across Booking.com and Marketplace.
  • Partner with product, engineering, marketing, and business team members to find opportunities for experimentation and ensure alignment with company goals and objectives. Effectively communicate experimental results, insights, and recommendations to senior leadership, driving informed decisions at the highest levels of the company.
  • Be a Discovery and Sparring partner for other teams across the Marketplace Data Org, working closely with the Customer Data and Insights, DSA, and ML on operationalizing and productizing the insights into our Data Platforms and Booking Products.
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of data scientists and analysts, fostering a culture of innovation, teamwork, and continuous learning.

Ideal Experience & Skills:

  • Significant years of experience as data science authority at a high growth enterprise, with extensive exposure to Experimentation and Causal Inference in consumer-facing online products
  • Hold a higher degree in a Data Science field such as Computational Biology, Statistics, Quantitative Social Science, Mathematics, or a related field (PhD preferred but not required).
  • Subject matter expertise in Data Science and/or Analytics with a consistent record of working on successful innovative products at a global scale and deep involvement in Experimental Design, Measurement, and Causal Inference
  • Experience with leading and coaching teams of senior Data Scientists and managers and an ability to build and grow Data Science teams as needed.
  • Experience working with Product and Technology departments and cross functional senior collaborators.
  • Able to apply extraordinary data science products to Marketplace initiatives using excellent change-management and story-telling skills.
  • Set the vision and strategy to use data to steer the Experimentation and Measurement initiatives for our business.
  • Able to function in a fast-moving high-reaching environment
