Sr. Scientist, Pre-Formulation and Solid State Characterization

About This Role

Biogen is seeking a highly motivated and experienced scientist to join the Pharmaceutical Sciences team within Small Molecule Drug Product Development to advance preclinical assets into clinical development and beyond to commercialization. The candidate will have various responsibilities to support Biogen’s rapidly expanding pipeline.

This is an on-site role to be based at our Headquarters in Cambridge, MA. 

What You'll Do

  • Perform comprehensive characterization, stability, and compatibility studies of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).
  • Utilize expertise in powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and other spectroscopic techniques (IR and Raman) for crystallographic structure elucidation.
  • Conduct/oversee screening for polymorphs, salts, and co-crystals to identify and select lead candidates for clinical development.
  • Develop a deep understanding of drug substance attributes such as solubility, polymorphism, morphology, and stability, and use this knowledge to conceive formulation strategies.
  • Lead critical activities in pre-formulation and represent the group in multidisciplinary project teams responsible for advancing the preclinical and clinical pipeline.
  • Lead and drive innovation in understanding API molecular-level and bulk properties, and enhance formulation capabilities using various experimental techniques, modeling, and data analysis to improve API developability and commercialization.
  • Author and review technical protocols, reports, scientific papers, patents, and relevant regulatory sections in Investigational New Drug (IND), Investigational Medicinal Product Dossier (IMPD), New Drug Application (NDA), and other filings.

  • PhD with at least 4 - 6 years of experience in Pharmaceutical Science, Materials Science, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, or related science field of experience required. Equivalent experience equals a MS degree with at least 8 years of experience or a BS degree with at least 10 years of experience. 
  • Sound knowledge and experience in solid state chemistry, including polymorphism, co-crystals and salts.
  • Advanced technical skills in solid state characterization of API (e.g. PXRD, SCXRD TGA, DSC, DVS, TAM, IR, Raman, microscopy, particle size analysis, etc)
