About This Role

Genetic causes of rare diseases are being identified at an increasing rate, and advances in therapeutic modalities are opening new and exciting possibilities for transformational treatments. The Rare Disease & Neurology (RD&N) Research Unit is seeking a talented and dedicated Sr. Associate Scientist to advance research for drug discovery and development programs. As part of a close-knit team, the successful candidate will work at the forefront of an exciting and growing field and contribute to bringing life changing medicines to patients with neurological rare disorders.

What You’ll Do

  • Investigate novel biology and therapeutic approaches in human and rodent cell systems
  • Implement and execute diverse in vitro assays to support the unit’s research and drug discovery programs
  • Support in vivo work with rodent models of genetic disorders
  • Participate in close collaborations with other group members within the unit as well as other teams at Biogen (DMPK, Translational Medicine, Biomarkers, etc.)
  • Plan, execute, troubleshoot and analyze experiments, working closely with manager and/or project team leaders, and present results at internal meetings
  • Incorporate learnings from relevant literature and new technologies

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree - Biology or related field with 2-4 years of experience
  • High level of technical expertise in some of these relevant areas: cell culture, protein/RNA/DNA analyses, in vivo animal studies (behavior, dosing, sample collection, stereotaxic surgery, etc.), molecular cloning, qPCR, microscopy
  • Hands-on expertise with performing and troubleshooting cell-based assays
  • Enthusiasm, dedication, flexibility, and collaborative spirit necessary to learn and take on new areas of research and drug discovery.
  • Highly organized and goal oriented.

Preferred Skills

  • Hands-on experience in the development/characterization of in vitro or in vivo CNS disease models
  • Background/expertise with models of epilepsy or neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Expertise with cultures of primary human or rodent neurons and/or iPSC-derived cells
  • Experience contributing to drug discovery programs, particularly in neuroscience, including novel target identification, target validation, and PK/PD studies
