Job Description

About This Role:

As a Packaging Engineer in the Packaging Development team, your primary mission will be to develop, test and implement packaging solutions that enhance the safety, sustainability, and patient-convenience of our products. You'll find yourself deep in the world of Oral Solid Dosages, Injectables, and complex devices like Pre-Filled Syringes and Auto-Injectors. Your time will be consumed in the lab and the office exploring new innovative packaging materials and solutions to improve product safety and sustainability.

Your role is pivotal in ensuring that our products are not only compliant with stringent regulatory standards but also excel in quality and functionality. Collaborating with a dynamic, cross-functional team, you will harness your materials science knowledge and packaging design expertise to develop systems that stand at the intersection of patient care and cutting-edge technology. Your technical writing skills will be crucial in creating the documents that support our rigorous testing and regulatory processes. In essence, you are the link that binds product stability and user-centric design, contributing significantly to our overarching goal of delivering world-class pharmaceutical products.

This is a hybrid role to be based at our headquarters in Cambridge, MA.

What You’ll Do:

  • Design and develop optimized packaging solutions for primary, secondary, and tertiary packs, ensuring they meet functional requirements and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with the Asset Team, EM, QA, Supply chain, and other key stakeholders to ensure packaging designs are patient-centered and sustainable.
  • Select and test packaging materials to ensure product stability and regulatory compliance, writing and approving test protocols and reports.
  • Coordinate packaging material testing and design verification, involving the Global Packaging and Device Development teams.
  • Author technical documentation for packaging, including design requirements, development plans, and risk assessments.
  • Manage the packaging laboratory, overseeing testing and maintenance activities while working closely with the Global Packaging Team.
  • Work with external vendors and labs to source and qualify packaging materials and components.
  • Engage in cross-functional collaboration to align packaging development with product objectives.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and management, presenting technical findings and progress.
  • Manage multiple projects and tasks, ensuring timely delivery of objectives.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to quality and world-class packaging standards in collaboration with QA, CMO, and Brand Protection teams.

Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field, with a strong preference for a Packaging Engineering/Science degree.
  • A minimum of 1-2 years of relevant experience in Packaging Development, preferably within the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and/or food industry.
  • Solid understanding of packaging related standards, regulations, and cGMP environment.
  • Proficient in technical authoring of regulatory documents and technical communication.
  • Comfortable working independently within a matrix organization.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a diverse team of junior and senior engineers.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience specifically in pharmaceutical packaging and familiarity with device/combination product regulations.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving capabilities and innovative thinking in packaging design.
