The Manufacturing Engineering group at Biogen plays a crucial role in advancing the production of bulk drug substance by ensuring the efficient operation of both upstream and downstream manufacturing processes. The team is responsible for managing and troubleshooting the complex systems involved in the manufacture of biopharmaceutical drug substance, ensuring that all equipment functions optimally in a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) environment. By focusing on equipment reliability and maintenance, the group directly supports the company's mission to deliver high-quality, safe, and effective therapeutic products to patients.

Interns will gain hands-on experience in troubleshooting issues that arise with the bioprocessing systems and learn to interpret critical engineering documents, such as process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and equipment specifications. Additionally, they will navigate the company's engineering support systems, which are designed to enhance operational efficiency and ensure compliance with industry standards. By working with a skilled team, interns will contribute to the ongoing optimization of manufacturing processes, ensuring that the company's products meet stringent quality requirements. This role offers valuable insight into the critical aspects of bioprocessing that drive the company's mission of improving patient outcomes through innovation and excellence in manufacturing.

Qualifications

Biogen is seeking a highly motivated engineering student to join the Manufacturing Engineering (Upstream) group at our RTP Bio location. Intern will be responsible for the following:

  • Team Collaboration:
    • Work under the supervision of a technically focused Engineer within Biogen’s Manufacturing Engineering group. 
    • Working with engineering team members and technical development engineers to support process & mechanical equipment projects / troubleshooting of process issues. 
  • Project Management:
    • Oversee the execution of projects from start to finish, ensuring adherence to timelines, budget, and scope.
    • Collaborate with multiple teams, including Manufacturing, Automation, Maintenance, and Safety, to ensure project requirements are met.
  • Communication and Documentation:
    • Maintain clear communication with stakeholders.
    • Document project plans, specifications, and other relevant technical information.

Example projects may include:

  • Add Sight Glass to H3 Cyclone Tank - Add a sight glass to the cyclone tank to improve visibility for maintenance and ensure proper bowl seating during batch processing.
  • Glycol Blowdown Safety Improvement in LSM Harvest - Address safety incidents involving glycol blowdown, focusing on improving safety by adjusting valve sequencing and line release procedures.
  • Re-validation of Carboy Cycle (#2) on 22-COP-3915 - Revalidate the carboy CIP cycle for a new set of carboys with the same worst-case volume but different dimensions.
  • WFI Drop for Filter Flushing with Small Scale Manufacturing - Coordinate with small scale manufacturing to ensure that Water for Injection (WFI) is available for filter flushing.

Qualifications:

  • Proficient in MS office programs & Technical Writing 
  • Self-Starter with good communication skills and willingness to learn new skills.  
  • Attention to detail is important for troubleshooting and document review.

To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university

Education

  • Completed at least two years of undergraduate studies prior to scheduled start date.
  • Candidate must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related Engineering disciplines.
