Job Description
We are seeking a Head of Strategy & Operations for Biogen West’s Development organization, reporting to the Head of Development. This individual will serve as a key business partner to the development head and will be immersed in strategic and operational elements for the development teams (inclusive of clinical development, clinical pharmacology, operations, biomarker, biometrics, regulatory, and project management). This includes including leading and driving organizational operations, supporting insight and access to the organizational strategy, and optimizing communication and alignment across the organization globally. A critical operational role will be to establish and maintain systems, processes, and structures to support the business unit’s rapid expansion, while enabling efficient execution of development programs, as well as ongoing building and integration of new development and research priorities. This role also serves a similar function in supporting the Head of Regulatory, Safety and Quality in a dotted line relationship.

The successful individual will bring a highly organized approach and will work directly alongside the development head on multiple areas of the business, encompassing strategy, business operations, hiring, staffing, and helping to prioritize projects to ensure the effective delivery of program commitments and to support portfolio health.
What You'll Do
- Support and be part of the Development Leadership Team by organizing and facilitating Leadership team meetings, including driving and developing the agenda and ensuring action items are tracked and completed in alignment with Head of Development’s vision and strategic intent
- Act as a strategic architect and trusted thought partner to Head of Development and executive leaders by providing insights, building processes, generating business options, and delivering results; forge strong relationships with stakeholders across the organization to ensure clear decision-making and robust project management and governance processes to ensure the effective delivery of program commitments and to support portfolio health
- Lead functional networks/teams, to initiate, design, and implement diverse critical, strategic initiatives in alignment with functional and corporate priorities (e.g. leadership development, Inclusion & Diversity efforts, digital innovation, operational efficiencies, budget management, portfolio analytics, staff training and compliance, service provider oversight); collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify business challenges and opportunities, as well as translate them into actionable plans that yield high-quality, impactful outcomes
- Partners with the Head of Development and leadership team to define the KPI’s for the business unit; serves as liaison for the Development organization with other departments/organization and acts as poxy and information funnel/filter, as needed, on behalf of the leader
- Manages organizational priorities, projects, decisions, and actions that supports the Head of Development and organization growth in alignment with the overall strategic goals of the organization
- Produce compelling presentations and visualizations to communicate insights and recommendations to key stakeholders across scientific and business community; presentations may include Development-centric business updates, Board updates, earnings calls, leadership meetings, project/initiative presentations, keynotes, and all Hands presentations
- Partner with other Heads of Strategy & Operations in Research and Development, as well as the Biogen West Chief of Staff, to ensure alignment across enterprise and realize synergies
- Develop and implement integrated strategies to align Regulatory Affairs with Clinical Development, Commercial, and other cross-functional partners, driving seamless collaboration to expedite development timelines and enhance portfolio health
- Drive communication and alignment across leadership teams, fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration to support regulatory milestones, portfolio priorities, and the timely delivery of therapies to patients
- Travel with executive to headquarters/partner/analyst/employee meetings and events, as needed
This position is a hybrid role based in South San Francisco, CA and requires frequent travel into the office.
Qualifications

- Bachelor’s Degree is required; Master's degree or MBA preferred
- Strong scientific and/or medical background is preferred
- Excellent communication, analytical skills, and strategic agility
- 10+ years of experience leading large/complex programs and initiatives
- Strong operational skills; project/ timeline management capabilities
- Effective problem-solving skills
- Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to both influence key stakeholders as well as drive for decisions and outcomes when necessary
- Able to thrive in a highly dynamic, collaborative, fast paced, and continuously changing global environment with minimal oversight/direction.
Additional Information
The base compensation range for this role is $196,000 - $294,000. Base salary is determined by a combination of factors including, but not limited to, job related years of relevant experience, internal equity, and location of the job. Additionally, this role is eligible for participation in Biogen’s LTI grants and other incentive programs.
