About This Role:
Biogen is seeking an experienced leader to serve as the Director of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) for our Cambridge site. In this pivotal role, you will lead the EHS function, ensuring robust systems and programs are in place to maintain compliance, mitigate risk, and foster a strong EHS culture across the organization. Your strategic oversight will be critical to implementing Biogen's EHS Management System effectively at the site level, ensuring alignment with both external regulatory requirements and internal standards. As part of the Cambridge site leadership team, you will report to the Global EHS organization and collaborate closely with site leadership to advance global and local EHS initiatives. Your contributions will be essential in promoting a safe and healthy workplace, minimizing environmental impact, and sustaining Biogen's commitment to excellence in EHS practices.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous enhancement of EHS programs, aligning with company standards and industry best practices.
  • Partner with site leadership to interpret EHS regulations in the context of business operations and emerging legislative changes.
  • Provide EHS guidance and support, ensuring the management of risks and regulatory compliance.
  • Supervise and mentor EHS personnel, fostering a culture of responsibility, accountability, and empowerment for EHS.
  • Represent the Cambridge site in interactions with external EHS stakeholders.
  • Set and pursue short- and long-term EHS objectives in collaboration with site leadership and various departments.
  • Participate in risk assessments and analyses to identify and mitigate high-risk areas.
  • Manage EHS-related budgeting, forecasting, and planning for expenses, capital, and personnel needs.
  • Review capital requests and change orders for EHS implications.
  • Coordinate efforts to prepare for emergency situations that could impact employees, facilities, or the environment.
  • Oversee hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, including all related inspections, training, and recordkeeping.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as needed to support the evolving needs of the organization.

Who You Are:
You are a seasoned EHS professional with a technical background and a passion for creating and maintaining safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible workplaces. You bring a strategic mindset and a track record of leadership within the EHS field, particularly in the biopharma industry. You are adept at navigating complex regulatory landscapes and are comfortable engaging with both internal teams and external stakeholders. Your excellent communication skills enable you to articulate EHS concepts clearly and effectively to a diverse audience. You thrive in dynamic environments and are skilled at leveraging data to drive decision-making and program enhancements.

    Qualifications

    Required Skills:

    • BS/BA in Engineering, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Life Science, or a related technical discipline (MS preferred).
    • A minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in Environment, Health & Safety, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
    • Advanced knowledge of EHS Management Systems and legislation, familiarity with ISO 14001 and 45001 standards.
    • Previous EHS work experience in biopharma or a related industry is required.
    • Expertise in environmental programs, particularly hazardous waste management.
    • Experience engaging with regulatory authorities, auditors, and other external stakeholders.
    • Proven ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and senior leadership.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to use data and analytics for decision-making and program improvements.
    • Strategic thinking with a results-oriented approach and exceptional problem-solving abilities.
    • Adaptability in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities.

    Preferred Skills:

    • Professional EHS certification (e.g., CIH, CSP) is highly desirable.
    • Experience leading global EHS programs or initiatives.
    • Proven track record in implementing innovative EHS solutions within the biopharma industry.

    Additional Information

    The base salary range for this position is $176,000 - $242,000. Base salary offered is determined though an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.  

    Regular employees are eligible to receive both short term and long-term incentives, including cash bonus and equity incentive opportunities, designed to reward recent achievements and recognize your future potential based on individual, business unit and company performance.
