Job Description

This application is for a 6-month student role from January - June 2025. Resume review begins in October 2024. 

The Manufacturing Engineering (ME) department at RTP Bio is seeking an eager and highly motivated engineering student who is interested in joining our Downstream team. The Downstream team handles purification equipment, ranging from chromatography and filtration systems to buffer and product hold tanks. ME’s are responsible for supporting manufacturing operations by troubleshooting process equipment system issues and identifying improvements. ME’s are also responsible for overseeing validation protocols, validation testing, and report approvals. Additionally, ME’s support technology transfer of new and existing processes across the facility, including Flexible Volume Manufacturing (FVM), Small-Scale Manufacturing (SSM), and Large-Scale Manufacturing (LSM). On a day-to-day basis, ME’s are expected to work closely with a variety of different cross-functional support groups and thus exercising strong communication and soft skills are imperative.

Position Description 

The 2025 Spring Co-op will join a fast-paced team environment and will be expected to lead at least one project to completion throughout the six-month duration. In addition to the project, the co-op is expected to execute daily tasks that contribute to the overall success of the ME Department, including but not limited to equipment troubleshooting, product changeover, P&ID markups, job plan revision, Kneat protocol review, and work order review. By the end of the experience, the co-op should have a comprehensive understanding of the Manufacturing Engineering role and its relationship to the organization overall.  

The ideal candidate will perform the following: 

  • Train within a GMP environment and develop a strong understanding of the biotechnology organization 
  • Practice and reinforce safety principles on and off the manufacturing floor  
  • Work under the supervision of technically focused Engineers within the Manufacturing Engineering Downstream group 
  • Collaborate with engineering team members and cross-functional support groups to prioritize and optimize manufacturing deliverables 
  • Lead a project to completion by the end of the 6-month timeline  
  • Contribute to the upkeep of documentation and preventative maintenance by reviewing P&ID’s and improving/creating job plans 

Example projects may include: 

  • Commissioning and validation of cleaning increased hose length in SSM Purification COP bath 
  • Evaluate CIP rinse (initial WPU and final WFI) and wash solution preps that can be reduced in volume to decrease resources and overall CIP time across the site  
  • Identify similarities and differences between RTP (SSM and LSM) and SOL (BMC1 and BMC2) operations and equipment 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is: 

  • Able to work on multiple projects and tasks within the same timeframe  
  • A self-starter who is not afraid to take initiative 
  • An excellent communicator  
  • Willing to learn new skills and to keep an open mind 
  • Able to field high-stress situations  
  • Highly attentive to detail for troubleshooting and document review 
  • Proficient in MS office programs & technical writing  

To participate in the Biogen Co-op Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria: 

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. 
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date 
  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university 

Education 

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or other related Engineering disciplines.

  • This position is on-site in Research Triangle Park, NC.
