Job Description

This application is for a 6-month student role from January - June 2025. Resume review begins in October 2024. 

Biogen’s Translational Medicine Fluid Biomarkers group is seeking a highly motivated co-op to join a dynamic team engaged in the discovery and development of novel biomarkers to support research efforts and possible implementation in preclinical and clinical studies. Responsibilities include identification, evaluation, and characterization/development of relevant biomarkers (including extracellular vesicle-based biomarkers) in support of multiple programs across Biogen. The role will be predominantly laboratory based (80-90%) and will work closely with other team scientists in a matrixed environment.

Position Description 

Detailed description of role including but not limited to: 

  • Search literature and databases to identify cell-type specific extracellular vesicle (EV) biomarkers of interest  
  • Isolate and characterize extracellular vesicles from various biofluids using different platforms and work towards developing in-house assays to measure specific analytes of interest 
  • Perform tissue RNA extractions, qRT-PCR, and immuno-based assays (e.g., ELISA, MSD) in support of programs as needed 
  • Collect and aliquot plasma from K2 EDTA whole blood, keep detailed log and inventory of samples in support of larger study 
  • Participate in and support other laboratory initiatives as needed 

Example projects may include: 

  • Development of in-house extracellular vesicle biomarker assays 
  • Proteomic and transcriptomic analysis of biofluids from patients with myotonic dystrophy type I (DM1) 

Qualifications

  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and organized 
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment 
  • Experience in immuno-based platforms (ELISA, MSD) or molecular techniques (RNA isolation, qPCR) is a plus 

To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria: 

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. 
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date 
  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university 

Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree (or degree in progress) in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or related scientific field
