Job Description

This application is for a 6-month student role from July - December 2025. Resume review begins in January 2025. 

The ASO/OSD manufacturing team supports the manufacture of clinical and commercial therapies in Biogen’s Antisense Oligonucleotide (ASO) and Oral Solid Dose (OSD) facilities. Our teams work on ensuring consistent and quality supply of Biogen’s products to patients and those enrolled in clinical trials. The ASO/OSD manufacturing team collaborates cross-functionally with colleagues in Quality Assurance, Manufacturing Sciences, Engineering, and other functions to complete technology transfer of new pipeline products, operational improvements to existing manufacturing processes, and new factory startups and capital projects. Manufacturing is responsible for knowing the factory inside and out and consistently working to improve operations. Joining the ASO/OSD Manufacturing team is a great way to learn about the product development life cycle of pharmaceuticals and work on impactful projects to improve the efficiency of running facilities.

Position Description 

This co-op position for Fall 2025 will support manufacturing activities, the startup of new processes and equipment, and operational excellence projects across three factories at Biogen’s RTP Pharma site. This co-op will primarily focus on continuous improvement projects that improve the efficiency of the manufacturing facilities and enable personnel to work quicker, easier, and simpler. This person will attend key operational meetings and participate in discussions with wide cross-functional teams to manufacture new programs and improve the facilities. The co-op will also be responsible for managing their own projects from concept through execution with a great opportunity to demonstrate leadership and project management acumen. 

Example daily responsibilities: 

  • Arrive to the office 
  • Attend morning meeting to align on the day’s activities and share project progress 
  • Meet with stakeholders in Manufacturing and Engineering to discuss a project to better structure a factory’s materials storage area 
  • Meet with Manufacturing Sciences and Quality Assurance to discuss some facility changes that might be required for a new pipeline molecule 
  • Spend time in the factory with manufacturing operators to find inefficiencies in their process of weighing out materials 
  • Spend the rest of the day working on these projects 

Final deliverable: 

  • At least one major implementation of an operational excellence project from conception through execution. 

Example projects may include: 

  • 5S of processing facilities to improve efficiency of operations 
  • Implementing a cleaning and inspection process for equipment tooling components 
  • Creation of facility labor model for a new factory that will come online in 2025 
  • Creation of new organization and storage system for consumable materials 

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma principles 
  • Project management 

To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria: 

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. 
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date 
  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university 

Education 

  • Pursuing an undergraduate or master’s in engineering or science degree from any accredited university

  • This role is on-site in Research Triangle Park, NC.
