Biogen is seeking a Co-op student to join its Analytical Development (AD)-Biologics/Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP) department in Cambridge, MA. This position will be working alongside with other group members on developing liquid chromatography (LC) and/or electrophoresis methods for the separation and characterization of protein therapeutics, as well as AAV-based gene therapies. He/she will have the opportunity to participate in the method development utilizing novel separation technologies and approaches. The successful candidate will also gain knowledge on how the pharmaceutical industry work collaboratively in cross-functional teams to support process development and product characterization. As a co-op, you will do the following:
- With guidance from the manager and other subject matter experts, perform method development and qualification experiments with a variety of analytical techniques such as liquid chromatography (HPLC/UPLC) and electrophoresis (CE, icIEF)
- Develop methods for separation and characterization of protein and AAV gene therapy products, including but not limited to size exclusion, anion/cation exchange, hydrophobic/hydrophilic interaction, reversed phase, capillary electrophoresis, etc.
- Opportunity to learn additional protein characterization techniques and methods, e.g. mass spectrometry and some other chemical and biophysical analysis methods.
- Contribute to the preparation of technique reports, posters, and presentations, etc.
- Learn how the pharmaceutical industry develops new drugs and get familiar with the industry settings.
Qualifications:
Preferred Skills
- Basic lab skills including pipetting, buffer preparation, protein sample handling and preparation, etc.
- College level or advanced level courses in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics and Labs
- Previous lab research experience, internship or co-op experience is preferred
- Experience in development of chromatography- and/or electrophoresis-based methods is highly desirable.
- Willingness to learn new methods, drug development processes, new modalities, etc. and ability to demonstrate scientific curiosity and innovation.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong team player with ability to execute tasks independently and as part of a team.
To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
- At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
- Be currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university
Education
- MS or Ph.D. candidates in Analytical Chemistry, Protein Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related disciplines with at least one year of university studies prior to co-op work
