Job Description Summary

The Staff Interaction Designer collaborates with Marketing and R&D team members, applying user research methodologies and technical design skills to generate insights and concepts that lead to the development of digital interface product platforms for innovative medical devices and systems. As a member of the User Experience Design (UXD) team, the Staff Interaction Designer will work with multi-disciplinary teams to apply strategic thinking to short- and long-term design directions and will deliver innovative, end-to-end user experiences that optimize user needs, business goals, and technological realities for each project. Projects will include cloud-based software, knowledge portals, embedded medical device software, hardware, and medical disposables.

This highly collaborative position requires high professionalism, communication skills, mentoring capability, and influencing skills to work effectively with cross-functional internal stakeholders. The ability to evangelize user experience work and to influence leadership is crucial. On the tactical level, the Staff Interaction Designer will maintain deliverable schedules, track personnel assignments, and drive trade-offs as needed for all Next Generation design work streams. Soft skills that create successful employee-manager relationships are necessary. Growing and mentoring UXD talent to improve strength within the organization is an important and rewarding aspect of this role.

The User Interaction Design function is part of the User Experience Design Team (UXD) within the MMS Business unit. The goal of the UXD Team is to stimulate and lead concept and technology innovation spanning multiple product platforms, including Dispensing Technologies and Infusion Systems.

This is a Hybrid role, and we require you to be onsite 3 days per week.

Our vision for Medication Management Solutions at BD

With our technical capabilities, the Medication Management Solutions (MMS) team are able to manage multiple systems and our operational capabilities enable us to have medications available when and where needed, reducing inefficiency and waste for nursing and pharmacy teams.

Main responsibilities will include:

The Staff Interaction Designer will be part of the UXD team working to improve lives globally through design. You will have the opportunity to apply design thinking principles to product development and strategy, to deliver innovative experiences tailored to healthcare professionals' needs. The Staff Interaction Designer will contribute during all phases of the product design process with particular emphasis on User Experience definition, design, and implementation. Your job responsibilities will include the following.

  • Drive and apply user-centered efficient design processes while working collaboratively with cross-functional teams on multiple matrixed work streams
  • Transparently manage, track, negotiate trade-offs, and report out success UX metrics for all the projects you oversee.
  • Implement regular 1-1s, design review meetings, demonstrations, for the internal and external teams involved in your projects.
  • Create close professional relationships with key cross-functional leaders in order to understand where the business unit is going so that we can prepare our team (hire, train, etc.) adequately to support future needs
  • Effectively utilize and teach relevant user experience methods to developers and other stakeholders, such as how to apply a corporate design language, design frameworks, problem framing, design principles, how UXD works in Agile Scrum, and overall design thinking
  • Ability to deliver and manage the creation and delivery of UI specifications, wireframes, workflows, and low- and high-fidelity Axure prototypes, and other relevant outputs
  • Build positive, collaborative relationships across teams/groups/functions through facilitative leadership, storytelling, teaching, mentoring, and inspiring colleagues to value UX work and to include UX early in every project

About you

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in User Experience (UX) Design, User Interface (UI) Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design or related degrees.
  • Minimum 9 years of experience working as an interaction/visual designer in a leadership role
  • Demonstrated track record of success designing software and hardware in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • 5+ years of relevant and proven experience in Interaction Design (experience within a regulated industry such as medical is strongly preferred).
  • Ability to effectively communicate interactive and interface design data, design proposals, and product specifications and to explain the rationale behind design decisions clearly and in a way that inspires stakeholders.
  • Ability to concisely critique designs for improvement and to translate customer feedback into strong design decisions.
  • Strong skills in creative design tools including Axure, Figma, InVision, Adobe Creative Cloud, Jira, Kanban, MS Project etc.
  • Strong understanding of responsive design, cross-platform development, and app frameworks.
  • Success in , applying, , a company product design language guide and ensuring that colleagues apply elements accurately with strong design thinking behind their decisions.
  • Demonstrable ability to work closely and collaboratively with developers implementing your designs to save time, create the best possible designs, reduce rework, and improve outcomes.
  • Proven success working in an Agile development environment and strong knowledge of how interaction and visual design are best utilised in a SCRUM environment.
  • Organised, self-directed, efficient, and able to manage multiple and complex projects on time.
  • Experience with the healthcare field and medical devices is a plus.
