The Senior Staff Scientist will be responsible for leading scientific research that advances New Product Development and Sustaining Engineering for products within the BDI Surgery portfolio, with a focus on Biomaterial applications. The associate will work with a high degree of independence to resolve and pursue the scientific course of action vital to achieve high-level business objectives for Biomaterial projects of commercial products and products in active Product Development. The individual will be responsible for analyzing, interpreting, and communicating results to a broad range of scientific and non-technical stakeholders, that may include external publications and presentations. The associate will also be engaged in driving strategic innovation to identify high-value clinical adjacencies that may support Biomaterial technology solutions. This includes leading sub-teams to evaluate new opportunities in the Idea phase and assessing their potential to drive strategic growth, as well as contributing to the organization's long-term strategy to build its portfolio in growth areas.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads and manages complex scientific strategies that drive a comprehensive compilation of benchtop and preclinical evidence to support successful regulatory submissions, clinical trials, and product launches.
  • Identifies and develops products and technologies to drive sustainable growth in the value of the Surgery new product portfolio.
  • Supports sustaining engineering projects to address scientific challenges that arise for commercial biomaterial products.
  • Applies expert knowledge in scientific/engineering theories to execute overall project assignments.
  • Contributes significantly to projects in specialty through original/novel/innovative input.
  • Conceptualizes, prioritizes, schedules and executes project deliverables.
  • Identifies and creates strategic partnerships with external KOL physicians and scientists as needed to resolve scientific challenges.
  • Maintains technical liaisons with collaborators within and outside the organization.
  • Designs experiments and test protocols and executes and/or directs their execution.
  • Interprets experimental results to determine appropriate course of action. Acts as a subject matter expert to the organization for testing scientific hypotheses and as a stimulus for the highest caliber of scientific rigor.
  • Publishes and/or submits patent applications in area of expertise.
  • Formulates and conducts systematic investigation of problem areas of considerable scope and complexity which must be approached through a series of complex and conceptually related studies.
  • Provides technical consultation on the application of new technology to the business strategy.
  • Interfaces with other departments and internal/external partners to facilitate product development and sustaining engineering.
  • Completes assessments of programs in the Idea phase of the innovation process to evaluate their potential to drive strategic growth.
  • Collaborates with R&D and Strategic Innovation leaders in the organization to contribute to the development of a long-term strategy to enter high-value clinical adjacencies that may justify a Biomaterials approach, including technology landscaping, market research and analyses, and needs finding.

Qualification, Knowledge and Skills:

  • 6-10+ years medical device proven experience (post-doc inclusive).
  • Advanced research-oriented degree(s) (Ph.D. essential) with technical depth in biomaterials, engineering, technology, or life sciences fields, with academic and research distinction.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply innovative ways to technology and product development preferred
  • Demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact scholarly journals and podium presentations at highly regarded international conferences.
  • Proficiency in scientific method, experimental design, data analysis, and results interpretation.
  • Strong relationship-builder, with a consistent record of leading and collaborating in teams and across functions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and social skills.
  • Able to lead and excel in a highly matrixed and cross-functional environment.
  • Self-motivated with a strong sense of urgency and willing to take hands-on work.
  • Capable of balancing multiple priorities and working under deadline pressure.
