BD Technologies and Innovation (BDTI) is an enterprise R&D center located in North Carolina that helps bring high-impact, new-to-world innovations into development. The Senior Scientist will be part of a multi-disciplinary Innovation team supporting a variety of medical technologies and solutions with an initial focus on disease diagnostics.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Innovation, the Senior Scientist will serve as a key technical contributor both in and out of the lab. The candidate should have a strong technical background in chemistry that has been applied to a range of problems in biology or medicine. Skill sets at the interface of biology and chemistry (e.g., complex clinical or biological sample preparation, developing assays and reagents that perform in complex biological systems, bioconjugation) are strongly preferred.

The Senior Scientist must be able to effectively collaborate with team members from widely varying backgrounds and should have strong oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate will have the ability to organize and regularly conduct complex hands-on lab experiments in support of program goals. They will also have an interest in technically contributing to areas beyond diagnostics due to the dynamic nature of the Innovation team and the variety of programs that the team supports.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Apply chemistry expertise to a range of problems in biology and medicine including diagnostics, implantable devices, and materials
  • Serve as subject matter expert to support biological sample prep optimization across BDTI's innovation programs
  • Design and execute statistically sound experiments with the purpose of developing technology solutions that address prioritized unmet needs
  • Remain up to date on published research literature and commercial landscape of relevant technologies
  • Assess external technologies for fit with identified unmet needs and performance requirements
  • Provide project progress updates to key project stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree in chemistry, biological chemistry, biology, physics, or related field (PhD or MS preferred; chemistry degree preferred)
  • B.S.+ 4 years of relevant industry experience is required OR
  • M.S. + 2 years of relevant industry experience OR
  • Ph.D.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience applying chemistry-based approaches to complex clinical or biological sample preparation for diagnostic applications is strongly preferred
  • Strong technical background in chemistry that has been applied to a range of problems in biology or medicine preferred
  • Experience developing assays and reagents that perform in complex biological systems is strongly preferred
    Experience with bioconjugation is preferred

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to plan and conduct scientific experiments and effectively analyze, interpret, report, and present experimental results
  • Ability to translate an issue or problem statement into study strategy
  • Ability to influence others without direct reporting ties
  • Demonstrated learning agility and ability to adapt quickly to shifts in program priorities
