Senior Director - Software Engineering

The Senior Director of Software Engineering leads the execution, design, and implementation of a next-generation technology platform responsible for building core services, accelerating software delivery and providing a unified experience for BD customers. This is a high visibility / high impact role, directly influencing business agility and operational efficiency. The position will drive how BD leverages technology to bring large scale products to the market and creating leverage points by building platform shared APIs, frameworks, infrastructure, data sharing, and common user experience.

The Senior Director will lead cross functional collaboration with business partners, product management, and architecture to understand customer needs and deliver high quality solutions that delight users.

The role is equally responsible for ensuring engineering best practices are employed consistently across all teams and owning the definition of the SDLC processes.

The role reports directly to the Vice President of Software Technology Solutions and participates as a member of the STS Leadership Team, and will have an R&D function of more than 50 associates.

Job Responsibilities:

• Leadership and Management: Build and lead high performing engineering teams that deliver on business goals and collaborate effectively. Mentor and develop future engineering leaders within the organization.
• Execution and Delivery: Proven ability to execute complex, multi-year platform roadmaps with measurable business value and incremental delivery.
• Strategic Vision and Planning: Contribute to the company's strategic direction by setting platform engineering vision and aligning engineering goals with business objectives.
• Design and Development: Lead the design and development of complex software systems that meet robust standards of scale, availability, security, performance, and cost efficiency.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with product management, marketing, architecture, customer service, and other departments to ensure alignment to needs and successful project delivery.
• Stakeholder Management: Communicate effectively with senior stakeholders to gather and analyze requirements, ensuring alignment with business goals and technical feasibility. Present to executive leadership and manage external partnerships.
• Operational Oversight: Oversee budgeting, resource allocation, and process improvement to ensure efficient and effective engineering operations.
• Risk Management: Identify and mitigate technical risks and challenges throughout the software development lifecycle
• Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous innovation and improvement initiatives within the organization to maintain competitive advantage.
• Cultural Fit and Contribution: Drive high performance engineering culture and alignment to BD Way principles.

Qualifications:

• MS (preferred) or BS in Computer Science or Information Systems or equivalent

• 10+ years of hands-on experience in Software Development and Architecture and building software platforms supporting multiple product lines

• 7+ years in a leadership role managing teams developing distributed systems leveraging cloud architectures.

• Experience leading high-stakes, high-visibility initiatives with executive sponsorship.
• Healthcare or other regulated industry experience

• Familiarity with Agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum, Kanban) and frameworks (SAFe).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements:

• Strong sense of teamwork and collaboration that empowers a team first culture and continuous learning.
• Ability to drive standardization across engineering teams to improve scalability, security, and maintainability.

• Focused "results" orientation. Clearly able to distinguish efforts from results.

• Ability to influence, engage and partner closely with various stakeholders across all levels of the business.

• Strong communication (written/oral) and presentation skills that can effectively bridge the gap between technical and business audiences.

• Personal courage in leadership and decision-making.

• Combines strategic planning to paint the big picture with tactical execution to ensure business objectives are achieved.

• Ability to lead execution multiple concurrent efforts.

Technical Skillset Requirements:

• Experience in platform engineering: multi-tenancy, APIs, frameworks, shared services, and infrastructure.
• Strong experience in cloud computing and modern software development practices
• Experience in designing, coding and debugging in multiple software languages
• Experience in data-intensive applications.

Additional Requirements:

• Hybrid in San Diego preferred. Remote employees should be ready to travel once a month to San Diego.
