Role Overview
The Manager of MDS Communication will develop and execute communication strategies for both internal and external audiences. This includes communicating with employees, supporting change management, working with executives, handling public and media relations, and managing social media. These efforts will help strengthen the awareness and reputation of BD in Utah and improve employee engagement, driving business growth by increasing awareness of company priorities and key changes.
This role also ensures that MDS Utah employees are aligned with BD's overall purpose, strategy, and culture. The Manager will support public relations related to local community engagement, product PR, and social media activities, in coordination with BD MDS Communication. Additionally, this role will support communication strategies for the broader global MDS business in partnership with BD MDS Communication.
This position reports to the Associate Director of Communication & Change Management for MDS and is also operationally aligned with the MDS Utah Leadership Team.
Primary Responsibilities
- Develop and Implement Communication Strategies: Create and champion comprehensive internal communication and change management strategies to boost MDS Utah associate engagement. Ensure alignment with BD's purpose, strategy, and culture, in collaboration with MDS Communication and MDS Utah HR.
- Consult and Advise Leadership: Act as a strategic advisor to the MDS Utah leadership team, shaping proactive approaches to associate engagement.
- Support Culture Initiatives: Drive communication and change management efforts for culture, belonging and diversity initiatives, enhancing high-performing teams in partnership with MDS Utah HR and Leadership Team.
- Facilitate Site Connections: Serve as the communication point person for BD Utah, connecting the manufacturing site in Sandy with the business site in Salt Lake City to drive engagement and key change initiatives.
- Develop Communication Materials: Work at both strategic and tactical levels to create and deliver communication materials across internal platforms, channels, and geographies.
- Manage Communication Channels: Develop and maintain effective communication vehicles (e.g., Intranet, Town Halls, newsletters, Viva Engage, social media). Innovate and refresh these channels, measuring and reporting their effectiveness.
- Community Relations and Public Relations: Create public relations plans for community engagement, identifying target audiences and strategies to highlight BD Utah's efforts and contributions, with support from MDS Communication and Public Policy teams.
- Support Global Communication Strategies: Assist in implementing global MDS business communication strategies to enhance understanding and engagement with business priorities, purpose, strategy, and culture.
- Enhance Social Media Presence: Grow MDS's social media presence and strengthen leadership visibility by implementing a content management strategy and leveraging expertise for thought leadership.
About You:
- Bachelor's Degree required - preferably in Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Business or related field.
- Minimum 6 years professional experience required, with at least 4 years in corporate communication (preferably in a global, publicly traded company). Experience in life sciences industry or other high science field is highly preferred.
- Must possess excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills with strong editing and proofreading capabilities.
- Experience in change management and transformation.
- Experience in external communications and public relations.
- Proficiency in social media, web and other digital communication technologies and tools is preferred.
- Experience in video production and editing is preferred.
- Expertise in AP Style writing highly preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro) highly preferred.
Qualified candidates should be prepared to submit three writing samples during interview process.
