Responsibilities:

  • Generally, product lines assigned to this level are challenging and complex to manufacture serodiagnostic reagents produced at BD-Grayson. Almost 80% of associate's time is required to perform these duties. Associate must be able to manufacture assigned product lines independently after the hands on training post hire.
  • Formulate polyclonal antiserum, antigens and initiate all related activities including testing, glassware cleaning, equipment cleaning/Cleaning in Place (CIP), temperature monitoring of controlled areas. Edit, modify and review documents such as SOPs, test methods, protocols, Batch History Records, etc. Assist in technology transfer/design/documentation.
  • Assist in process improvements of existing product lines.
  • Assist in the completion of the documentation required under GMPs, GLPs, OSHA, EPA, USDA, FDA and corporate policies. Performs final review of all bulk manufacturing shop orders prior to release to Quality Assurance. About 20% of time is required for this activity.
  • Makes technical decisions regarding product status and delivery dates.
  • Analyzes internal product failures.
  • Helps generates change controls regarding bulk manufacture after advisement from department supervisor or manager.
  • Operate centrifuges and other related equipment such as water baths, spectrophotometers, AKTA protein purifiers etc.
  • Manufacture all media and solutions required for manufacturing processes. Participate in the upkeep and stocking of the media room. Other related activities include scheduling batches, autoclaving, immunizations, temperature monitoring, cleanup of lab area, etc.
  • Perform sterile filtration of both intermediate and finished products using various methods and equipment.
  • Perform chemical delipidization of animal and human sera.
  • For employees assigned task lists inclusive of fermentation activities, also will perform setup, operation and cleaning of the various fermenters, software, downstream processing equipment and other ancillary equipment in this laboratory.
  • May be asked to perform other production related activities and training will be provided.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must be able to lift moderately heavy weights.
  • Must be able to endure prolonged standing and walking within the facility.
  • Must be non sensitive to chemicals used in manufacturing processes.
  • Must have high visual acuity, (corrected or uncorrected), to be able to detect articulate flocculation patterns or reactions.

Education and Experience:

  • BS. in Microbiology or Biochemistry or other biological sciences preferred.
  • Must possess good basic mathematical skills, i.e. addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, exponents, fractions.
  • Must possess good scientific aptitude and abstract problem solving abilities.
  • For individuals with a BS. degree, a minimum of one year work experience in a life science laboratory is desired. This includes broad knowledge of the manufacture and testing of immunodiagnostics manufactured at BD-Grayson is required. This knowledge must extend over the majority of product lines being manufactured,
  • Be able to develop new process technologies for manufacturing resulting in more efficient, less costly products ,development of new products and transfer of new products from an R & D level to a manufacturing level.
