We are seeking an experienced Backend Developer/Architect who will work closely with our frontend and product teams to build and maintain robust, scalable APIs that enable smooth interactions between our frontend UX and backend services. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of API design, data integration, and the importance of delivering seamless, efficient user experiences through backend technologies.

As a member of the COO architecture team, you will drive innovation and continually improve solutions for both internal and external customers. You will report to a Distinguished Architect within the COO organization. This role offers the flexibility to work remotely from US or Canada, assuming you can accommodate North American time zones for your regular working hours. For those near one of our office hubs, hybrid/remote may be available as well.
Responsibilities
- API Development: Design and build RESTful APIs and GraphQL endpoints that power frontend features and provide smooth, responsive user interactions
- Backend Optimization: Ensure backend services are scalable, reliable, and secure. Focus on reducing latency, optimizing database queries, and improving API performance to meet the needs of the frontend
- Collaboration with Frontend Teams: Work closely with frontend developers to ensure proper integration of APIs with the user interface. Resolve integration issues related to data handling, performance, and error management
- Database Design: Manage and optimize database systems (SQL/NoSQL), ensuring efficient data storage, retrieval, and consistency for the frontend
- Security Implementation: Implement authentication (JWT, OAuth) and authorization and ensure secure communication between the frontend and backend. Design systems with rate-limiting and data validation to enhance security and prevent abuse
- Troubleshooting and Debugging: Monitor and debug API performance and integration issues, ensuring quick resolution of any problems affecting the frontend UX
- Scalability: Implement strategies like Backend for Frontend (BFF), caching, load balancing, and auto-scaling to ensure the system can scale effectively as the platform grows
- Continuous Improvement: Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices in backend technologies. Contribute to the improvement of development processes, architecture, and the overall user experience
Minimum Qualifications
- 8+ years of backend development experience, with a strong focus on API development and supporting frontend integration
- Proficient in backend languages such as Node.js, Python, Java, and/or Go
- Strong experience with RESTful APIs and GraphQL for building efficient and scalable API endpoints
- Hands-on experience with relational and non-relational databases like PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, and Redis
- Knowledge of security practices such as OAuth, JWT, SSL/TLS, and data validation
- Experience with performance optimization; caching strategies (e.g., Redis, Memcached), rate-limiting, and optimizing backend services for high performance
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) and experience with serverless or microservices architectures is a plus
- Strong debugging skills, with the ability to diagnose and fix issues across both backend and frontend layers

Salary transparency
Salary is one part of Autodesk's competitive compensation package. For U.S.-based roles, we expect a starting base salary between $159,100 and $257,400. Offers are based on the candidate's experience and geographic location, and may exceed this range. In addition to base salaries, we also have a significant emphasis on annual cash bonuses, commissions for sales roles, stock grants, and a comprehensive benefits package.
