What is the role?

Are you a devourer of books who loves when student-led discussions explore and debate themes in literature? If you can’t stop reading novels, poems, and plays, and revel in the intricacies of language, we welcome you to join our collaborative team of educators at Brooklyn Ascend High School (BAHS).

We are currently hiring for English teachers for the following courses:

  • English I
  • English II
  • English III
  • English IV
  • Advanced Placement (AP) Language & Composition
  • Advanced Placement (AP) Literature & Composition

These courses invite you and your students to explore themes of personal identity, community, colonialism, and power through a diverse and engaging selection of texts from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Our texts range from Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime, Sula, and The Central Park Five to classics like The Glass Menagerie, Song of Solomon, and Hamlet.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Contribute to an Innovative School Model: BAHS is designed differently than the average high school; including extended core lesson blocks, a diverse array of electives, and structures for in-school student support. Student choice and agency are primary drivers of our model, and we’re looking for educators who are excited to join us
  • Provide Engaging Lessons: Prepare and teach differentiated lessons every day that follow the rigorous, Common Core-aligned Ascend curriculum and selected texts.
  • Champion Equity: Build a justice-oriented classroom environment, implementing restorative practices
  • Build Strong Connections: Develop and nurture strong relationships with students and families
  • Drive Instruction with Data: Use data strategically to drive instruction and ensure student mastery of standards
  • Continuously Grow: Actively participate in grade-level meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development, including an annual summer institute
  • Commit to Student Success: Accept ultimate responsibility for the academic progress of your students, and work actively to overcome setbacks

Qualifications

We are seeking an educator who:

  • Has expertise in teaching and working with high school scholars
  • Holds a Bachelor’s degree, with advanced degree preferred
  • Thrives in a collaborative environment and values teamwork
  • Has excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Has demonstrated success using data to drive instruction, with a strong understanding of pedagogy that drives results
  • Embraces continuous improvement and seeks feedback to refine their teaching practice
  • Has a relentless drive to set and achieve ambitious achievement goals
  • Takes a high level of ownership over the success or failure of the scholars they lead, defining success in terms of academic results
  • Aligns with the educational philosophy and core beliefs of Ascend Learning
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with diverse backgrounds and perspectives

Compensation:

Initial salary offers for this position range from $60,000-$90,000. Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience and levels of attained education.
