As Senior Manager of Responsible Development & Safety, you will be driving policies that guide the safe and responsible deployment of Apple Services' user-facing features. You will drive policy frameworks that help limit harms associated with high-risk user experiences, build guidelines for internal engineering, human evaluation, and safety research teams, identify risks and mitigation strategies for new product features and functions.

Description

The role involves collaborating with engineering, research and product teams to assess and measure the impact of ASE features. Your role involves ensuring safety best practices, reviewing AI model performance, and providing guidance. You'll use your expertise in technology's societal implications to contribute to research projects and improve the safety development ecosystem. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: - Drive and support implementation of safety policies defined by AI Safety teams. - Collaborate with AIML, Product & Design, Privacy, Human-centered AI, policy leads, and business owners to define program requirements, set priorities, and establish scope of AI or ML models. - Set objectives and key results and the long-term strategy for the Responsible AI policy measurement, including benchmarks and review of safety performance of AI models. - Lead a small team of managers. - Develop new programming and generate opportunities for ASE to regularly engage with Policy, Legal, and Privacy teams. - Design engagement models to solve ethics and safety challenges, e.g. running workshops, engaging with external experts, to help teams consider the direct and indirect implications of their work within ASE. - Develop and document standard processes through working with machine learning engineers and experts, and where appropriate, external organizations.
  • Ph.D., J.D. or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Machine Learning, and/or Human-Computer Interaction
  • 7+ years proven experience drafting or updating product and / or user policies in multiple regions of the world

Preferred Qualifications

  • A strong understanding of the challenges and issues in the field of AI ethics and safety, through AI and society experience (e.g. relevant governance, policy, legal or research).
  • Experience leading new teams and advocating for innovative initiatives within a well established organization.
  • 7+ years experience aligning product policy decisions between diverse sets of collaborators, such as Product, Engineering, Security, and Legal teams.
  • Experience navigating and assessing complex ethical and societal questions related to technology development, including balancing the benefits and risks of research and applications.
  • Strong executive management skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in tight turnaround times.
  • Excellent experience collaborating with technical stakeholders and highly interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Pay & Benefits

    At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $200,400 and $358,200, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
