The Apple Service Engineering (ASE) Data Services team is looking for an extraordinary, hands-on engineering manager to lead a team building the best of breed systems for dealing with our complex and ever-growing data and infrastructure needs. We are a key part of the Apple ecosystem, supporting millions of users and billions of transactions. The Apple Service Engineering team supports tens of millions of pieces of content in more than 150 markets enjoyed by hundreds of millions of users, which powers various features within the Apple client applications - iCloud, App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV+, iTunes, iBooks, Podcast, etc. We've got unique and growing needs for data storage and consumption.

Description
As an engineering manager, you will lead and mentor a team of engineers who build the large scale data services providing abilities like structured and unstructured storage, caching, queueing and much more. You will lead the team to build services and infrastructure platforms that can efficiently scale and serve data with very low latency and high availability. You'll collaborate cross-functionally with various Apple teams, from SREs and Engineering Program Managers (EPMs) to customers like store and commerce, search and recommendations, AIML, and many more. You should be someone who: * is both a highly technical, hands-on coder and an effective people manager. * is willing and capable of diving deep into details. * is not afraid to question assumptions. * is a good team player who collaborates well. * tackles problems with elegant technical solutions and always fight for excellence. Your responsibilities include: * Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals, align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams. * Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role, meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development, and provide feedback and coaching. * Develop the mid-term technical ideas and roadmap within the scope of the team, and evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs. * Design, guide, and vet systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and write product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems. * Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.
- Deep knowledge, experience of using/contributing to at least one of the scalable data stores, such as Cassandra, Redis/Valkey, MongoDB, Memcached, Voldemort, FoundationDB, etc.
- Hands on experience developing distributed systems, databases, large scale data systems and/or Backend API's.
- Experience working on complex problems and distributed systems where scalability and performance are extremely important (every millisecond counts).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience contributing to Open Source projects is preferred.
- Experience with compute/container platforms such as K8s is highly desirable.
- Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
Pay & Benefits
- At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $181,000 and $313,000, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
