As part of Apple Services Engineering our team is responsible for building platforms, libraries, and frameworks which form the foundations of mission-critical systems at Apple. We write software in Java and Swift programming languages and specialize in frameworks for highly available distributed systems. We firmly believe in growing a strong community of our platform and framework users. We are looking for an engineering leader to focus on building cloud native and server less platforms. The ASE Frameworks team builds foundational libraries and developer tools for services development in Apple Services Engineering. We're a collection of highly skilled and friendly engineers who value each other's opinions and experience. We strive for excellence and believe strongly in the quality of our output. We have built a team of domain experts who specialize in specific core subject areas, and also have broad experience of cloud software services and platforms.

Description

You will have significant responsibilities in building and improving platforms for running large-scale, mission-critical services. As an engineering leader you are responsible for setting the direction of the team and ensuring the goals are delivered. This work will include collaboration across multiple teams across Apple to help define, implement and deliver the shared vision. To hit the ground running we believe a deep understanding of the Java language and complex distributed backend systems is required. A proven track record of working in the Java and CNCF open source ecosystem will make you the perfect candidate. Successful candidates will have strong engineering skills and communication, as well as the ability to build relationships and collaborate across the company. You will have a real passion for quality, technical excellence, and an ability to understand complex systems. If this sounds like you, then we would love to hear from you.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Minimum of 8 years of Java software development with a proven track record operating apps in production.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a technical team while actively contributing to code reviews and technical decisions.
  • Deep understanding of containerization and serverless computing technologies.
  • Hands-on experience building software defined cloud infrastructure and automation.
  • Experience and passion for managing a small cross functional team.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and presentation skills.
  • Focus on quality and small details to produce reliable, maintainable, deliverable software.
  • Comfortable diving deep and working across multiple levels of abstraction.
  • Excellent collaboration and relationship building skills.
  • Influential within team and leadership across the company to achieve your vision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to Swift, Rust or C/C++
  • Experience writing code generation tools.
  • Experience with monitoring, telemetry, and performance optimization in cloud environments.
  • Contributions to OSS especially related to CNCF projects.
  • Experience using agile or iterative development methodologies.
  • Deep understanding of continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $181,000 and $313,000, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
