Description
A Data Center Mechanical Subject Matter Expert is an integral professional responsible for optimizing and maintaining the mechanical systems that ensure data centers perform effectively and efficiently. They serve as a knowledgeable bridge between the technical and operational aspects of data center infrastructure. With a strong understanding of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, cooling strategies, free-cooling technologies, and energy efficiency measures, MSMEs assist with design and implement mechanical solutions to meet the specific cooling requirements of server racks and data processing equipment. They conduct regular audits, analyze performance data, and identify potential issues that could impact data center reliability or energy consumption. MSMEs continuously learn and stay updated with industry trends and technologies. This position emphasizes collaboration with cross-functional teams, including engineers, IT professionals, and facility managers to develop cost-effective and holistic solutions for data center cooling functionality and efficiency, contributing to the overall success of critical data center operations.
- Associates Degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience including licensing, certifications, and/or data center on the job training.
- Practical experience with mechanical systems such as cooling technologies, water treatment equipment, pumps, motors, etc used in Data Center environments or similar
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, stoop, push, pull, reach and lift as required, on a continuous basis, with items that can weigh up to 75 lbs
- Ability to work extended hours within a Data Center Environment and typically within a heat range of 60 degrees Fahrenheit upwards of 110 degrees Fahrenheit while following OSHA driven work rest cycles.
- Ability to climb and use a ladder varying in types from A-Frame to extension ladders at various heights.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Vocational achievements with practical application: Used knowledge and skills earned from a vocational school in mechanical engineering or equivalent trade to design, build and maintain equipment, making valuable contributions to organizational goals.
- 5+ years of practical field experience in mechanical engineering in a data center or related field.
- Experience in designing and implementing mechanical systems for large-scale high-density data centers.
- Understanding of water treatment, including chemical dosing, filtration, testing, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience with CFD simulation toolkits like ANSYS Fluent or OpenFOAM
- Knowledge of software like AutoCAD, Revit, Trane Trace 3D, and Weil-McLain Water Treatment Software.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
- Strong technical writing and presentation abilities
- Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
