We’re hiring a Senior Data Scientist to drive the product analytics and experimentation strategy for AppFolio’s risk mitigation business. You’ll help protect millions of people from financial risk by driving growth for AppFolio Insurance Service's renters' insurance offering while partnering with product, engineering, design, and other data scientists to solve challenging problems and propel one of our fastest-growing businesses to greater heights.

Your Impact:
  • Serve as the strategic liaison between FolioGuard leadership and product management to spearhead insurance-related product adoption initiatives.
  • Analyze and champion data-driven efforts within FolioGuard’s suite of insurance products, making strategic product decisions, optimizing purchase funnel performance, and achieving attributable outcomes in policies purchased and renewed while mitigating canceled premiums.
  • Develop and implement robust experimentation frameworks in partnership with product and engineering teams, leveraging A/B testing and data-driven methodologies to drive continuous growth and enhance user experiences.
  • Conduct sophisticated customer and user behavioral segmentation to assess the impact of new products or policy changes, deepening insights available for FolioGuard leadership.
  • Identify and advocate for data-driven product changes that improve the interpretability of FolioGuard product data.
  • To facilitate more effective adoption reporting, partner across Resident-focused Data Science efforts to advocate for and build shared data assets for multi-purpose applications. This will allow for deep insights into root cause and Insurance financial driver trends across high-dimensional data.

 

Qualifications:
  • Strategic Influence:  Proactively connect leaders towards the common goal of bettering the company via Data Science and Product Analytics. Leverage uniquely informed perspectives to highlight business/customer ‘win/win’ opportunities to stakeholder leaders to inform and inspire action.
  • Advanced Business Acumen:  Has a deep understanding of how businesses work and is knowledgeable in SaaS vertical practices, trends, and technology.  Applies the right financial, customer, and product metrics, strategy, and market knowledge to make sound business decisions.
  • Communication / Executive Presence:  Has authentic communication skills, including transparency and clarity in both formal and informal settings including one-on-one, small and large groups across different levels and departments.  Applies exceptional presentation skills to distill complex information into simple concepts & compelling stories.
  • Programming Skills:  Highly proficient in SQL and knowledgeable in relational databases and data structures. Strong background in Python and/or R  for statistical analysis and machine learning and familiarity performing EDA with Notebooks
  • Data Communication & Visualization: Communicates results to technical and non-technical stakeholders in a clear manner at a level necessary for decision-making. Able to produce dashboards and data visualizations using Tableau or similar software. 
  • Cross-Functional Knowledge:  Navigates across verticals and functions and understands how each department contributes to our mission.  Able to build relationships and quickly establish trust with others to make things happen. Brings teams and people together to accomplish important things.
Must-Have
  • Strong mathematics, statistics, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge or familiarity with the insurance space
  • 6+ years of work experience in a Data team, including statistical software (e.g., R, Python) and relational database languages (e.g., SQL - Snowflake preferred).
  • Experience building data products and transforming data inside of data pipelines
  • 6+ Product Analytics and user behavioral data expertise.
  • Data Visualization: Streamlit, Tableau, (Looker, PowerBI)

 

Nice to have
  • Data modeling experience using DBT.
  • Experience building data products, data pipelines, tooling or automation
  • Experience in one or any of the following:
    • Customer Workflow Products (customer input data)
    • B2C Marketplaces
    • Marketing software products 
    • B2B SaaS Products

 

Compensation & Benefits
The base salary/hourly wage that we reasonably expect to pay for this role is: $127,000-$170,000
The actual base salary/hourly wage for this role will be determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to: the candidate’s skills, education, experience, etc. 

Please note that base pay is one important aspect of a compelling Total Rewards package. The base pay range indicated here does not include any additional benefits or bonuses/commissions that you may be eligible for based on your role and/or employment type.
