This is a high-impact role where you will be responsible for the Architecture and Engineering strategy, execution, and ongoing optimization.

Your Impact:
As the Principal Software Engineer, you will be a key leader and change agent, designing and implementing scalable, reliable, and secure applications that are optimized to support our rapid growth. This multidisciplinary role requires you to design, architect, develop, and maintain AppFolio’s enterprise applications and surrounding integration solutions. You will take technical ownership of various enterprise initiatives, working side-by-side with key stakeholders across AppFolio. The role exercises independent judgment in developing methods, techniques, and criteria for achieving objectives. We seek a highly skilled and experienced professional proficient in software engineering practices and enterprise architecture. In this role, you will primarily work as a Principal Engineer designing and building complex applications, with a specific focus on Enterprise Integrations. The ideal candidate will have proven ability to design and build complex enterprise applications and have extensive knowledge of integration techniques and technology, as well as the ability to provide architectural guidance to the team.



Qualifications:

 

  • Spearhead designing, building, reviewing, debugging, configuring, integrating, monitoring, documenting, and maintaining - agile, reliable, scalable, and secure enterprise applications.
  • Collaborate with business leadership to ensure balance between short- and long-term goals for the team.
  • Collaborate with diverse teams, including software engineers, application architects, product owners, and infrastructure teams, to define integration strategies, standards, and guidelines.
  • Demonstrate thought leadership through recognized architecture principles and cloud architecture techniques
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive architecture artifacts to communicate design decisions, patterns, and principles.
  • Architect and build scalable, resilient, fault-tolerant, and high-performance integration solutions, addressing security, data privacy, and compliance considerations.
  • Promote modern integration methods like serverless computing.
  • Encourage best practices in DevOps to enhance efficiency and automation.
  • Utilize expertise in messaging platforms (e.g. Kafka) for real-time integration and decoupling.
  • Review and guide technology selection, solution design, and integration practices across the organization as a member of the Architecture Review Board(ARB).
  • Lead architecture assessment, encompassing the evaluation of proposed Architecture Decision Records and administration of other aspects of the Enterprise Architecture Repository(ARB framework).

 

Must have:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.  
  • 15+ years of experience in Software Architecture and Engineering space, preferably in a high-growth SaaS environment with annual recurring revenue of $1B+.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Software Architect and/or Principal Software Engineer leading discovery, design, and development of multi-platform cloud-based solutions.
  • 5+ years experience and expert level knowledge in various software design patterns and architectures.
  • 5+ years of deep experience with multiple multi-tenant SaaS cloud-based enterprise and integration platforms like: Mulesoft, Salesforce, NetSuite, Zuora, and Workday(CRM, ERP, Billing, iPaas, etc..).
  • 5+ years experience designing and implementing AWS-based applications as part of large-scale enterprise architecture
  • Expert-level programming skills in Java, Python, Javascript, etc..
  • Proven experience in SDLC and Agile methodology driving execution of complex software projects.
  • Experience working in global teams, including offshore resources.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving troubleshooting skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust and credibility with business partners.  
  • Experience as a change agent, driving transformation and improvement within organizations.

 

Nice to have:

 

  • AWS Solution Architect, TOGAF, Salesforce CTA, Mulesoft Architect, Zuora Billing/Revenue Architect and similar certifications

 

Compensation & Benefits
The base salary/hourly wage that we reasonably expect to pay for this role is: $216,000-$270,000
The actual base salary/hourly wage for this role will be determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to: the candidate’s skills, education, experience, etc. 

Please note that base pay is one important aspect of a compelling Total Rewards package. The base pay range indicated here does not include any additional benefits or bonuses/commissions that you may be eligible for based on your role and/or employment type.
