Role Designation: Hybrid

The Director of Operational Resilience is a leadership role responsible for guiding a multi-layered team and driving cross-functional initiatives related to operational risk management. The role demands a deep understanding of regulatory requirements, particularly in the Canadian market, and the ability to collaborate with senior leadership, including the Chief Operating Officer. This leader will chair several key governance committees and will champion programs focused on business continuity, crisis management, distribution governance and third-party risk management.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Directs and guides the operational risk management strategy for the enterprise.
  • Leads the implementation of the Operational Risk and Resilience Management (ORRM) framework, balancing risk and return.

Operational Risk Management:

  • Manages operational risk assessments across the organization, identifying trends, emerging risks, and significant issues.
  • Responsible for independent challenges to first-line risk management activities, including thematic reviews and deep dives.
  • Develops and manages a risk monitoring, reporting, and escalation structure to ensure optimal risk-return strategies.

Committee Leadership:

  • Chairs key governance bodies such as the Operational Risk Council (ORC), Distribution Governance Committee (DGC), and the Crisis Management Orange Team.
  • Collaborates with and influences operational leaders to ensure the effective management of enterprise-wide risks.

Regulatory Expertise:

  • Familiarity with Canadian regulations and experience in implementing complex OSFI-mandated risk programs.
  • Collaborates with regulators to ensure compliance and guide cross-functional teams through risk program rollouts.

Operational Resilience:

  • Leads enterprise-wide initiatives to enhance and test operational resilience, including business continuity planning, crisis management, and third-party risk management programs.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This job has supervisory duties.

Education and Experience:

  • 4 year Bachelors Degree (Required)
  • Masters Degree (Preferred)
  • 12 or more years of experience (Preferred)
  • In lieu of the above education requirements, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Functional Skills:

  • In-depth understanding of operational risk and governance, and working knowledge of the Canadian regulatory environment, including OSFI guidelines
  • Experience in one or more key operational risk categories: Resilience programs: third-party risk management, business continuity, etc.
  • Data driven decision-making skills
  • Ability to demonstrate full command of risk management in situations of a difficult nature for a large project
  • Have a mastery level of understanding of multiple areas of business knowledge to successfully meet work objectives, as demonstrated by the knowledge of Allstate's business units that relate to work responsibilities.
  • Highly developed relationship management, influencing and leadership skills
