Position Summary
Alion is seeking a Technical Writer ("Entry Level Engineer") to support the team. We are looking for a candidate to write, rewrite and/or edit technical documents such as technical procedure manuals, user manuals, programming manuals, service manuals, operational specifications, and related technical publications to communicate clearly and effectively technical specifications and instructions to a wide range of audiences. A successful candidate for this position will work directly with a team of engineers and technical personnel to support complex analyses and testing efforts for the U.S. Navy in Dahlgren, Virginia. Located in King George County near the Potomac River, Dahlgren is just 50 miles southeast of Washington DC and provides a quality work environment without the traffic and congestion of a long commute. Dahlgren's unique location offers scenic views of Virginia and access to the Washington/Richmond metropolitan areas through U.S. Routes 3 and 301. Responsibilities
- Assists project managers and lead engineers in the development of technical reports and white papers. Ensures all information is presented in the format specified in the Alion writing guide, applicable contract documents. Ensures the document follows established guidelines for proper usage of items such as capitalization, verb usage, punctuation, footnotes, sentence structure, etc.
- Assists proposal managers, project managers, lead writers and others with writing project summaries and compiling project data submitted in response to request for proposals (RFP) from the government or other organizations.
- Acquires subject knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing performance of production methods, referring to technical specifications, blueprints, engineering illustrations, and trade journals. Oversees preparation of illustrative materials, selecting drawings, sketches, diagrams and charts.
- Conducts quality review of materials. Translates complex data into user-friendly text for print and electronic publications, such as technical journals, user and training manuals, government proposals, websites and podcasts.
- Gathers information through research, statistical reports and interviews with technical staff. Develops cataloging systems, and maintains records, files, electronic media and archiving of information for publications.
- Assists in preparing material for technical seminars and business forums. May be called upon to assist in technical or business presentations in such meetings as business or customer needs require.
- Assists in preparing information overview sheets to describe in succinct comments the capabilities of company developed software, capabilities and business cases for distribution at various venues.
- Selects or recommends use of layouts, graphics, drawings, tables, exhibits, illustrations, charts, or storyboards to amplify or clarify publications objectives.
Qualifications
- Advanced proficiency in the English language.
- Familiar with appropriate style guidelines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Associates Degree in Arts or Science (Bachelor's degree a plus)
- Prior experience preparing technical documents, test plans/reports, analytical evaluations, and presentations
- US Citizenship is required
- A security clearance of an appropriate level may be required after employment
