Position Overview

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) is seeking a part time Senior Technical Advisor that will assist the AI/ML Portfolio Director and the AI/ML Technical Director to fulfill their mission, leveraging commercial technology to solve DoD problems using AI/ML. We're looking for a dynamic leader who would like to make a difference for a national mission of critical importance. The part time Senior Technical Advisor is responsible for ensuring technical diligence and assessments of DIU projects as well as helping to drive AI/ML technology and policy across DoD and the rest of government.

  • Works with mission partners to identify and qualify compelling DoD problems.
  • Helps to identify and match commercial technologies to DoD problems.
  • Supports Program Managers in source selection, program execution, milestone assessment, and test & evaluation
  • Coordinates/manages the activities of DIU's AI/ML technical staff
  • Evaluates and calibrates level of technical risk taken on by DIU AI/ML programs
  • Provides technical support across a wide variety of applications; current projects span healthcare (computer vision), predictive maintenance (time series), business process optimization (structured data analysis), and knowledge graph construction (natural language processing + graph data analysis)
  • Supports public AI prize competitions and projects with other DIU portfolios: Cyber, Human Systems, Autonomy, Advanced Energy & Materials, and Space.
  • Leads the technical interface with other USG organizations including DARPA, OSD R&E, Department of State, Joint Artificial Intelligence Center
  • Contributes to high-level policy efforts such as operationalizing the DoD AI Ethical Principles, securing supply chains, response to legislative requests, and dialog with the broader policy community
  • Establishes connections to academia and early-stage industry so that DoD can keep abreast of capabilities that will most influence DoD's direction. Shares DoD's vision of the emerging capabilities can provide the greatest value to DoD.
  • Expert knowledge of current and emerging AI / computing technologies, academics, investors, and companies
  • Demonstrated track record of successful commercial software development, product and/or project management
  • Skills in understanding complex technology and translating those environments into executable solutions for large organizations (e.g. large companies, DoD, etc.)
  • Ability to exercise mature leadership and sound judgment in resolving problems involving multiple stakeholders and equities
  • Ability to independently collect, organize, analyze, and interpret data, and present findings and recommendations to senior leadership
  • Ability to communicate effectively with junior, senior, technical, and non-technical audiences on complex technical issues both orally and in writing, and to mentor less experienced team members.

  • Qualifications
    • PhD in computer science / engineering or similar technical degree(s) or Masters + substantial commercial experience
    • 10+ years preferred of professional experience positions of engineering, technical, and/or product development focus
    • Full-stack proficiency in a relevant set of software languages / frameworks (e.g. Python, C++, PyTorch, Tensorflow, Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
    • Experience developing AI / analytic models, performing test & evaluation, and deploying them to production
    • Ability to drive big-picture goals while maintaining strong attention to detail
    • Strong project reporting skills with a focus on interdisciplinary communication
    • Self-motivated with excellent time management and organizational skills
    • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills to achieve results without direct reports.
