We have an exciting opportunity to join our growing team! As a Mechanic Technician at HII you will provide task support by assisting workers in the skilled maintenance trades at the Newport News Shipyard!
What You Will Do
- Assists workers in the skilled maintenance trades.
- Ability to perform basic tasks by applying knowledge and use of basic hand tools and portable power tools.
- Must be able to follow instructions/ procedures
- Check and return tools from tool room. Assists in receipt and inventory of material, tools and equipment.
- Must have mechanical knowledge to be able to complete required tasking with limited supervision.
- May be able to identify system and component location based on ships structure.
- Able to apply skills of specialty trades functions and tools.
- Performs semi-skilled and unskilled laboring duties related to the installation, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of systems and equipment.
- May have the ability to accurately read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, and related forms.
- Must be able to use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures and capture OQE.
- Must have mechanical knowledge to complete tasking with limited supervision.
- May be able to identify system and component location based on ships structure.
- May have knowledge of naval ventilation systems, solenoid valves, cooling coils and ventilation ducting

What You Must Have
High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 2 years of related experience. Prefer technical/professional certifications. Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.
Bonus Points For Having!
- Knowledge of naval ventilation systems, solenoid valves, cooling coils and ventilation ducting
- Mechanical knowledge to complete tasking with limited supervision
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs.
- Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
