Metrology Engineer - Optical Instrumentation

As a Metrology Engineer with focus on Optical Instrumentation, you will be trusted to develop optical metrology instruments, and support new product development for medical device products. You will investigate and evaluate existing technologies, and design new instruments as needed for medical device development. This role will be located in Johns Creek, GA, and a typical day will include:

  • Design, develop and optimize optical instruments based on low coherence interferometry, optical imaging, wavefront sensing, machine vision for medical devices metrology applications.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to define system specifications, as well as hardware and software requirements.
  • Design custom hardware components, fixtures, or portion of a functional system. Integrate sub-systems with custom hardware components, diagnose and troubleshoot system issues.
  • Apply engineering principles to the research and development of medical device/science/technology and/or provide engineering expertise to support development projects.
  • Assure continuity of products and processes, lead and help validation of instruments/methods for medical device development and method transfer to production.
  • Create calibration method and criteria, perform regular calibration to ensure continued measurement performance.
  • Develop testing procedures, conduct experiments, write scripts to process data/images, and analyze data to ensure the functionality and accuracy of optical metrology systems.
  • Generate detailed technical reports, document design files, testing process and results. Create user manuals, train technicians and end users on system operation/maintenance.
  • Stay updated in latest optical technologies, identify new solutions to optimize and expand metrology instrument capabilities.

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +13 yrs; Assoc.+9 yrs; M.S.+2 yrs; PhD+0 yrs)
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English
  • 5 Years of Relevant Experience
  • Optical instrumentation, such as optical system design, imaging applications, interferometers, wavefront sensing etc.
  • Bachelor's Degree in optical engineering, or equivalent in biomedical engineering and physics, with focus on optics/optical imaging.
  • Analytical skills, including data analysis using tools such as Minitab, Matlab and/or Python
  • Knowledge/experience in optical technology and system integration, with familiarity with optomechanical design; CAD skills are desirable but not required.
  • Optical simulation experience is preferred but not required.
  • This position can be offered at Sr Engineer to Principal Engineer level, depending on the candidate's experience and qualification.
