In this role, you will be part of the Advanced Optics & Technologies team in Alcon R&D. The Fellow is recognized as an expert internally and externally who supports the business of our customers through efficient, effective and innovative engineering and/or scientific solutions. The Fellow develops advanced technological ideas and guides their development into a final product. It is responsible for planning and conducting research and/or development of major significance for serving both IOLs and CLs, necessitating the expert application of advanced knowledge in a particular field of specialization. An individual contributor who possesses the deep technical knowledge to implement strategic decisions.

In this role, a typical day will include:
  • Strongly supports the project/activity in ideation and R&D strategy development.
  • Provides robust evaluation, interpretation and judgment to select the right course of action within area of specialization to meet organization needs.
  • Builds and maintains proficient and highly nimble engineering or scientific capability, adaptable to diverse project types and stages of R&D.
  • Liaises with other areas of the business providing senior input and advice to global projects.
  • Provides comprehensive advice on a wide range of issues that are different but related within area of specialization to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develops and manages specific technical initiatives to deliver strategic and tactical results.
  • Provides industry knowledge in ophthalmic lens product development, optical engineering and visual optics consulting across the organization and develops intellectual property.
  • Awareness of the workings of the business beyond own team and some familiarity with the external environment as it affects own part of the organization.
Experience:
  • Research and/or product development experience, preferably with a focus on implantable medical devices, intraocular lenses, contact lenses or ophthalmic surgical instruments
  • Significant prior experience in functional capability building
  • Strong track record of technical achievement, evidenced by publications and/or patents
  • Strong interpersonal, process management, and problem-solving skills
  • Considerable organizational awareness (e.g., inter-relationship of departments, business priorities), including significant experience working cross-functionally and (preferably) in global teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with superior presentation capabilities
  • PhD in Vision Science, Visual Optics or related field strongly preferred.
  • >10 years in medical (ophthalmic preferred) product development.
  • >5 years of demonstrated technical leadership experience.
