The Highland Emergency Medicine Residency Program has trained emergency physicians for over 40 years. It has been ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) accredited since 1984, and now trains 11-12 residents per class in PGY 1-4. Based in one of the West Coast’s oldest public hospitals, the EM residency program is a national leader in Emergency Ultrasound, ED (Emergency Department) HIV testing and treatment, non-narcotic analgesia, ED initiated buprenorphine treatment, care of victims of sexual assault, as well as the birthplace of social emergency medicine. The program is nationally known for training emergency physicians who are clinically outstanding and can lead and thrive in any environment. Core faculty are based in the ED at Highland Hospital in Oakland, and are national leaders in their areas of expertise, highly clinically skilled, and outstanding bedside teachers. The Highland faculty is much smaller than most programs of comparable size. Therefore, the faculty group expects an elevated level of commitment to the residency program from its core members.  This position both supports the delivery of high-quality patient care to our community in the East Bay and the training of future leaders in Emergency Medicine (EM) who will carry out the mission of the department and hospital. Core faculty may also be selected for their specific expertise and unique contribution to the program. Core faculty are engaged in targeted residency activities, plus additional contributions based on their expertise in EM. A component of FTE is allocated for academic work and teaching for EM core faculty.
