Summary:
The pediatric exercise specialist will work as a member of a multidisciplinary team treating patients with pediatric obesity in the Healthy Active Living clinic. They will work with patients in the medical weight management program and may also work with patients in the adolescent metabolic and bariatric surgery program. The exercise specialist is primarily responsible for evaluating each patient’s physical activity level and working with the patients and their families to set reasonable exercise goals to help them be more active.

Responsibilities:
- Identify motivators of physical activity and discuss the benefits of being active
- Work with patients and their families to set reasonable exercise goals to help them be more active
- Discuss ways for patients to increase the intensity of their activity in order to obtain the benefits of exercise
- Empower families to start setting limits on screen time
- Discuss resistance training, when age appropriate, and provide patients with body- and free-weight exercise routines and circuit training workouts
- Educate patients about individual body composition
- Teach patients and families about the medical benefits of exercise such as improving asthma, hypertension, diabetes and depression/anxiety
- Discuss the importance of exercise in weight loss maintenance, especially for post-bariatric surgery patients
- Use objective measures to evaluate patient’s fitness improvements (e.g. 6-minute walk test)
- Attend department meetings as scheduled and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings regarding patient care
Other information:
Technical Expertise
1. Experience in community or organizational program administration is preferred.
2. Experience in program development and implementation for communities, families, and youth is preferred.
3. Travel between regional locations may be required.
4. Experience working with all levels within an organization is required.
5. Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.] or similar software is required.
Education and Experience
- Certification: physical therapist, athletic trainer, exercise physiologist preferred.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Allied Health required
- Years of relevant experience: 3 to 5 years is preferred
- Experience in program development and implementation for communities, families, and youth is preferred
