What better excuse to play dress up than preparing for a party? As we all prepare for New Year’s Eve, I decided to dive into my own wardrobe to give you some inspiration for what to wear to all the upcoming festivities.
From glitter to gold (or both!), read on for four ideas to help you ring in 2013 in style.
Opt for Pants
Your go-to NYE outfit might be a sparkly cocktail dress, but this year, be a little unconventional (and stay warm, too) by donning black pants. We're not talking your work pants, though—we're talking sleek, perfect-with-heels-on-a-Saturday-night pants. Here, I tried out a black jumpsuit topped with a lace top and vintage stole and heels. And—why not wear a top hat? It is, after all, the only time of year you can really get away with it.

Wear Sparkle on Sparkle
If you're going to go with sequins for NYE, I say go all the way. Layer one sequined item on top of another for an all-out festive look. The trick is to use the same color to layer, like I did here with a black sequined dress and jacket. Keep the rest of your look in the same palate, then choose one fun, different-colored accessory. I added a red bow, but a fun clutch or neon earrings would be fabulous, too!

Don a Bright Dress
Don't feel like sparkling, but still need a little something extra to get you out of a cold weather slump? Wear a punchy and bright-colored dress—you'll be sure to stand out from the rest of the New Year's Eve crowd, and you can still add a little glitz with a statement necklace. I chose a striped dress in a ladylike silhouette with fun (and super high) suede heels.
Go for Gold
Just like sequined dresses and top hats, gold clothes can be hard to pull off when it's not the holiday season. Which means: New Year’s Eve is the perfect excuse to wear all your gold clothes at once! Okay, maybe not all at once, but if you already have one gold piece (like this awesome gold sequined blazer), just buy a cheaper gold skirt or shorts to complete your monochrome look. You’ll be perfectly festive without having to buy a totally new outfit for the big night.
