During her senior year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Nazarene Tubman had a life-changing experience. Tubman traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, and was exposed to clinical research through volunteer work, specifically National Institute of Health (NIH)/Division of Aids (DAIDS)-sponsored HIV clinical trials.
“Seeing the impact of these trials in real-time was incredibly inspiring and made me want to be part of an industry that directly impacts individuals’ lives,” she says.
It was clear to Tubman that these clinical trials were vital for the many people in South Africa who needed them. After she graduated, Tubman landed a job at PPD—now part of Thermo Fisher Scientific—and began contributing to the work she’d seen while abroad. Throughout her long-standing biotechnology and pharma career, Tubman has worked at various Contract Research Organizations (CROs), advancing her roles and cultivating her skill set. Fifteen years later, she found her way back to PPD, where she’s now the Director of Project Oversight within the Vaccines Therapeutic Area.
“My passion for health equity and addressing disparities has always driven me,” she explains. “Project management allows me to lead and oversee trials and initiatives that directly improve patient care and access to innovative treatments.”

What led to your job at Thermo Fisher Scientific, and how did you know the company would be a good fit?
I was drawn back to PPD because I knew they were a leader in vaccines, and during the global pandemic, I felt compelled to contribute to the critical work being done to address the crisis. PPD’s values—innovation, quality, and collaboration—are aligned with my professional ideals and career goals. When PPD was acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific, I felt confident that I was in the right place. Thermo Fisher’s mission to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer resonated deeply with me. What are your core responsibilities as the Director of Project Oversight? Why does this work appeal to you?
As Director of Project Oversight within the Vaccines Therapeutic Area, I oversee and manage multiple vaccine studies, including those focused on flu, flu/COVID combination, and Zika. I ensure that these clinical trials are conducted with the highest standards of operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and scientific integrity, and are within budget.
Additionally, I’m involved in various initiatives that contribute to the broader goals of our organization. Whether optimizing operational efficiencies or collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure inspection readiness, I’m committed to advancing our research and development efforts. My work allows me to stay at the forefront of vaccine innovation, which is both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

You’ve been at Thermo Fisher Scientific for nearly four years. How have you evolved as a leader since first joining the company? How has the work culture directly impacted and benefited your growth?
Over the past four years, I’ve grown significantly as a leader by adopting a more strategic approach to project management and fostering a collaborative team environment. I’ve continued investing in myself and my colleagues, resulting in opportunities to grow, stretch themselves, and become more visible. Ensuring my team feels valued is a priority.
During my leadership journey, I’ve also learned that the work of a true leader will have an impact beyond their primary duties. The key ways I’ve evolved as a leader include enhancing my strategic thinking, improving my communication skills, and becoming more adept at leading diverse teams. Thermo Fisher’s inclusive, supportive work culture has been instrumental in my development. My managers have encouraged my personal development alongside my professional responsibilities, making themselves available for guidance and support.
Cultivating my personal growth has been as important as executing my immediate responsibilities. I’m able to bring my whole self to work; as a result, I’ve enriched my leadership style and effectiveness. Professional development opportunities and leadership training have also played a key role in my growth, ensuring that I continue to evolve as a leader and an individual.

What’s one highlight of your career thus far at Thermo Fisher Scientific, and why?
Honestly, it’s seeing my teams achieve milestone after milestone and knowing that I’ve supported them through a variety of challenges. Contributing to groundbreaking vaccine research and overseeing pivotal clinical trials have been particularly meaningful. Seeing the dedication and resilience of my teams is incredibly rewarding. These experiences are profound reminders of why I chose this career path and the difference we can make in people’s lives.

As the Support Talent Pillar Lead for the Global African Heritage BRG, I collaborate and work with other leads across the BRG to provide meaningful opportunities and professional development to our members. This group’s mission—to attract, engage, develop, and retain talented employees of African heritage to contribute to the success of Thermo Fisher Scientific—aligns with my personal and professional values including respect, advocating for equity, and collaboration.
Additionally, it’s vital to create safe spaces for colleagues to share their experiences and challenges. Being part of this BRG allows me to help create a more inclusive workplace where individuals feel valued and heard.

BRGs like the African Heritage BRG are crucial for Black women at Thermo Fisher because they provide community, mentorship, and voice. These groups offer invaluable support networks and resources that help members navigate their careers and overcome challenges unique to their experiences. The company’s leadership has supported and amplified the work of this BRG by participating in events, providing resources for initiatives, and recognizing the contributions of BRG members. Leadership also serves as executive sponsors for BRGs, which ensures that these groups and their concerns are heard at the highest levels. This support has greatly enhanced my experience at the company, fostering a more inclusive and empowering environment.

My advice for women aspiring to leadership roles at Thermo Fisher is to embrace continuous learning, seek mentorship opportunities, and be proactive in self-advocacy and self-promotion. It’s important to highlight your accomplishments and strengths. As the saying goes, “You can’t be a legend in your own mind”—don’t expect people to know what you’re achieving if you don’t tell them. Share your successes and ask for what you want or need.
