"The innovation that happens at TikTok is truly astounding, both internally as well as externally in the product itself."

What attracted you to work at TikTok? How did you know it would be a good fit?

I knew that the scope and impact l’d have by working at TikTok were unparalleled—it’s grown into such a massive platform with a vibrant, creative community. It’s an incredible opportunity to influence not just the digital media landscape, but also culture at large in the real world. At the same time, the organization is still relatively young, and I was excited to have the opportunity to build products and teams from scratch and shape the growth of the company.

What are you responsible for in your current role?

TikTok cares deeply about product and user experience, and as a product manager, I’m ultimately responsible for the outcome of every new feature that my team launches. I’m currently working on developing a brand-new augmented reality product related to TikTok effects (stay tuned!), and it’s my job to work with all the stakeholders on the team to determine what we should build (and not build), when we should build it and how we should bring it to market.

What are you working on right now that excites or inspires you?

On the TikTok product team, we’re always thinking about how to lower the barrier of creation for our community by empowering new ways for creators to tell their stories and express their creativity, as well as new ways for audiences around the world to discover engaging content. We’ve rolled out many new features and services over the past few years, including cutting-edge camera editing tools and AR effects, creator monetization features such as video gifts and tips, and new formats such as LIVE, longer-form videos, and TikTok on TV. We’re currently building a very cool new product in the AR space related to effects on TikTok.

What do you value the most about TikTok's culture?

One of the coolest things about the product team is that we have people from all types of interesting backgrounds and career paths—entrepreneurs, engineers, designers, data scientists, operations, and more! I personally started my career in investment banking and venture capital, then transitioned to strategy and partnerships before making the jump to product management.

How does TikTok encourage employees to innovate?

Whether I'm judging a hackathon or having employees test out in-development products, there's no shortage of innovation. It's astounding! Teams are always looking for other employees to test out in-development products. Also, collaboration is so important at TikTok. No matter what team or project you’re working on, we're all encouraged to lead with curiosity, take calculated risks, fall and get back up, and iterate fast. That's how we build resilience.

What advice do you have for someone in your field applying to jobs here at TikTok?

Don’t be afraid to be creative in how you express your interest in and qualifications for the role you’re applying to! For example, if you’re applying for a creator tools role, make a TikTok video showing what features you’d want to launch. Also, come prepared for your interviews—TikTok is a unique platform that is actually very different from many of the other platforms that it’s frequently compared to, so make sure you think deeply about those nuanced differences in your interview prep and responses.
