The Los Angeles Times is looking for early-career journalists from diverse backgrounds and life experiences to join its training program.
The Los Angeles Times Fellowship is a unique program designed to find, train and cultivate the next generation of diverse journalists so they can have successful journalism careers. Fellows are required to participate in group activities and in a series of rotational work assignments customized to support achievement of each participant's goals. Participants are recent college graduates or journalists with limited professional experience who are selected based on their potential and motivation for success as aspiring journalists with diverse backgrounds or life experiences.

Based on skill set and interests, fellows work as reporters, photographers, multiplatform editors, designers, web producers, audience engagement editors, data journalists and videographers. This could expand to other emerging roles at the organization, including broadcast and social media content creator. Expectations for the work are set at a professional level.
The fellows work with full-time staff and tasks vary from one rotation in the newsroom to another. Fellows proactively collaborate with various editorial staff members and must be open to instruction on work processes, tools, standards and expectations for results as well as feedback on their work product.
Fellows are responsible to meet with an assigned mentor as part of the program requirement. They attend group and individual training sessions. Among these will be a thorough grounding in journalism ethics and relevant laws pertaining to libel and privacy. Fellows are responsible to apply elements of journalism gained from academic coursework, campus projects, industry internships and previous work experience.
Trainees are expected to be open and responsive to frequent performance evaluations and coaching from each assignment that will support successful completion of the training portion while in the one-year program.
A bachelor's degree is preferred. Previous professional experience is also valuable but not required. Fellows can have up to three years' experience in a professional newsroom or up to five years in media settings such as weeklies and community newspapers, websites, fellowships and freelance work.

- Excellent communication with peers, supervisors and the newsroom
- Proven ability to juggle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
- Excellent journalism skills, combining strong news judgment, fluency in style and deep knowledge of taste and legal considerations
- Ability to navigate digital platforms and stay on top of current events
- Comfortable and skilled at engaging with readers on digital platforms
- Understanding of the importance of fairness, accuracy and precision
- Demonstrated ability to maintain high level of professionalism at all times
- An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace that promotes collaboration
- Comfortable appearing on TV, radio and podcasts on behalf of the L.A. Times
This position is listed as Los Angeles Time Fellow in the Los Angeles Times Guild and will be based in El Segundo, Calif. Reporting and visual journalism fellows must have a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle in good working condition. Occasional night, weekend and holiday work is expected.

The pay scale the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of the posting is $27.34 and takes into account a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, experience, training, licenses, certifications, and other business or organizational needs. Compensation will be determined based on the above factors along with the requirements of the position. At the L.A.
