The Wholesale Excess Casualty Division of Navigators, a Brand of The Hartford, is dedicated to providing creative solutions to meet the demands of a dynamic excess market.

Job Responsibilities

Underwriting Execution

  • Achieves assigned departmental goals and objectives
  • Underwrites new and renewal business, may or may not have the highest levels of Underwriting Authority among underwriting staff
  • Analyzes regional/assigned book of business on a quarter-by-quarter basis; Builds appropriate action plan with manager
  • Expertly applies all applicable underwriting guidelines when making account decisions
  • Capable of underwriting complex business with limited involvement from manager or product/referral teams
  • Coaches and supports junior underwriters on team
  • Proposes individual account insurance program to reflect risk quality, identified exposures and controls, loss experience, and achievement of bottom line profit results for the company with occasional need for input from manager, product or referral teams.

Sales /Agency Management

  • Independently build territory sales plans to achieve financial operating plan
  • Create, drive and execute strategies for new and/or renewal accounts with individual agencies
  • Serve as local lead in creation of sales plans and checkpoints with agents where appropriate
  • Establishes and maintains a pipeline of new business prospects
  • Responsible for communicating individual account strategy to agency, educates others on strategy, and involves manager as appropriate
  • Trusted advisor to agency - viewed as a solution provider due to technical knowledge, underwriting acumen and service
  • Coaches junior staff on agency management
  • Thorough knowledge of value proposition and capabilities of other segments of The Hartford to further a One Hartford approach to agency and account management
  • Conducts cost/benefit analysis before proposing changes

Product Knowledge and Policy Command

  • Presents to junior underwriters on coverage and policy language
  • Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local laws that impact our business
  • Contributes to the creation of/maintenance of underwriting guidelines through collaboration with product team
  • Strong working knowledge of profitability trends of the departmental and individual book of business, proactively seeks opportunities to improve and enhance results

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • 8 + years' Liability underwriting experience in the E&S market; excess casualty experience preferred
  • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining solid relationships with all internal and external business partners
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • An ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions.
  • High energy self-starter, who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Demonstration of solid time, organizational, and desk management skills
  • Goal-oriented and delivers outcomes
  • Ability to challenge the status quo and compete to win
  • Superior technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$169,440 - $254,160
