Job Description

The Director of BioTechnology Solutions Site Support (BTS-SS) will report directly to the regional Manufacturing Science & Technology (S&T) lead and play a pivotal role in leading a dynamic team of Scientists and Engineers. This position requires exceptional people management and leadership skills, complemented by a robust technical expertise in large molecule biopharmaceutical development and technology transfer within a manufacturing environment. The Director will oversee the technical support for the end-to-end processes encompassing antigen/drug substance, fill-finish/drug product, and packaging within the Large Molecule manufacturing portfolio at our DeSoto, Kansas Animal Health manufacturing site. As a key member of both the Site Leadership Team (SLT) and the regional Biotechnology Solutions Team, the Director will be instrumental in fostering a high-performing team culture and facilitating the professional growth of individual team members. In this role, the ability to lead, inspire, and develop individuals while leveraging technical expertise will be paramount to driving the success of our large molecule biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership and Development: Cultivate and lead a high-performing team by implementing best practices in hiring, performance management, coaching, and continuous talent development. Emphasize the importance of leadership skills to inspire and motivate team members towards achieving collective goals.
  • Strategic Development: Develop, execute, and continuously enhance the science & technology (S&T) strategy for the site, ensuring alignment with broader site and regional goals. This strategic vision should engage and empower team members at all levels.
  • Operational Support: Oversee and support daily manufacturing operations with technical assessments and troubleshooting. Ensure the team is equipped with the necessary resources and skills to address challenges effectively.
  • Technical Excellence: Investigate technical deviations and spearhead process improvements to enhance robustness and productivity, driving the team to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Promote robust collaboration and communication both internally and with external partner groups/stakeholders, including Operations, Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Regulatory, Commercial, Process Development, and R&D. Facilitate an atmosphere where open dialogue is encouraged, and ideas are freely shared.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or related field with at least 10 years of combined technical experience in large molecule (biopharmaceutical) development, technology transfer, and/or manufacturing, including a minimum of 4 years in a people management/leadership role; or
  • Master's degree with 8 years of relevant experience, including 4 years of management/leadership; or
  • PhD with 1 year of relevant experience, including 4 years of management/leadership capabilities.

  • Manufacturing Science & Technology Expertise: Proven proficiency in conducting and overseeing manufacturing support projects, ensuring robust process performance and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Innovative Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to develop innovative and practical solutions to complex challenges in both laboratory and manufacturing contexts.
  • Strategic Leadership: Ability to develop and articulate a clear strategic vision for the site's scientific and technological direction, with foresight to anticipate future trends and challenges.
  • Project Management: Demonstrated skills in planning, executing, and monitoring projects effectively, ensuring timely and budget-compliant completion.
  • Decisive Judgment: Capacity for strong decision-making, supported by data analysis and critical thinking.
  • Effective Communication: Ability to distill complex scientific ideas and technical details for a diverse range of stakeholders, including non-technical audiences and senior management.
  • Collaborative Mindset: Proven track record of fostering a collaborative environment, promoting teamwork, and successfully managing cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Conflict Resolution Skills: Proficiency in mediating conflicts and facilitating difficult conversations to maintain a positive work environment.
  • Business Acumen: Strong resource management skills-including budget oversight, personnel management, and equipment allocation-as well as a clear understanding of cost optimization and regulatory requirements (USDA, FDA, and/or EMA).
